TREND ALERT FOR MEN: Style tips to go short or long

Since it’s halfway through the year (what? June already?!), it’s time for a guy to update his wardrobe. There will always be tshirts and shirts to help change a man’s look, but how about updating your style with fashionable shorts and pants instead? From easy going shorts to comfortable jeans, here are some top choices and handy tips for the boys.

Shorts

Prints, checks, or good ol’ solids. Great for chilling at home, stepping out in the sun or for a beach vacation.

Trend Alert: Quirky prints on shorts (and shirts) are really hot right now. Play safe with polka dots and textures or go crazy with florals, camo prints.

Jacqueline Fernandes as Ayesha Aamir, film-maker

Jacqueline Fernandes in Roy

Clothes and accessories

This bohemian film-maker loves her crop tops, loose blouses and shorts (she is in sunny Malaysia, after all). Her accessories of choice? Geeky glasses (they come on and off), stacks of bracelets and open sandals. She also accessorises with dangling earrings or the quirky-cute studs. And oh, the few times she’s at work, she’s in a comfortable cotton shirt.

Hair and makeup

Jacqueline’s hair is coloured and carefully unkempt to complement her boho look. Makeup is minimal in a number of scenes though sometimes you will spot a hint of lip colour.

Chic Trend: 10 best floral pieces for the season

Chic Trend: 10 best floral pieces for the season

Ever since European queens donned floral ornamentation in portraits, flowers have appeared in hundreds of stylised forms, and have persisted even as the fashion cycle changes. They were popular in the 1940s, 1960s, and recently then in the last decade.

With girls around rhe world wearing florals this season, how do you embrace the pattern and still stand out? I’ve made it easier with some of the best floral fashion choices for the season, in dresses, tops, and accessories. Florals this season are bright and dark, modern and vintage, delicate and bold. Match them to your mood and have fun!

Take a look:

Psstt… My pick from these floral pieces is the top from French Connection. Love the colourful artsy print on the dark background!

Chic Review: What Not to Wear India

Chic Review: What Not to Wear India

Where are Trinny and Susannah?

Imagining What Not to Wear without Trinny Woodall and Susannah Constantine is a tough task. No fashionista duo comes a close second to these outspoken ladies. Who else can say, “Blondes and shiny fabric equals hooker” and “Cropped pants make any woman look like a stunted man” while keeping a straight face and meaning every word of it?

So the BBC folks (producers of What Not to Wear) got Soha Ali Khan and Aki Narula to play the style police for the India edition.

what-not-to-wear India Soha Ali Khan Aki Narula

Of course, they are no Trinny and Susannah. And then they aren’t that well-known either. Soha, for instance, has never been hailed as a fashion diva by the media or fans, and Aki Narula has more or less hung up his designing boots to focus on styling. But then, Trinny and Susannah became mini celebs after the show.

Bum shorts, anyone?

I had several initial apprehensions about What Not to Wear India. Firstly, would Indian women be willing be paraded on national television for their lack of style? Would the producers get interesting participants? And, most importantly, would the hosts be able to get across the much-needed fashion and style tips to us?

The answer is mostly yes. For instance, there’s a middle-aged mother of two who wore drab unflattering kurtis, and an aspiring model who only liked to wear “bum shorts”. Yeah, really!

Adopting the international format of the show, Soha and Aki first accost a subject nominated by friends or family, then put her in a “360-degree room” (completely surrounded by mirrors) in her favourite outfits. The duo then break down each outfit, explaining what works and what doesn’t. Explaining basic concepts of styling and fashion (like body types, prints, colours), a couple of sample outfits are demonstrated and explained. And then they both trash her earlier wardrobe. The “bum shorts” girl squealed as Soha and Aki dumped her entire hot pants collection. Then the participant is off on a shopping spree while Soha and Aki give their nods of approval or exclamations of disdain. Of course, it all ends happily ever after. 🙂

Yeah on fashion, meh on drama

Makeover shows are always fun to watch when executed well and so is this one. Soha may not have been a stylist but she’s got screen presence and explains style concepts well without talking down to the participant. My only grouse is that her look is the same throughout the few episodes I saw (feminine dress or blouse or with fitted skirt and heels). Aki Narula is his usual experimental style and though he doesn’t speak as much as Soha, his inputs are incisive. I especially liked his idea of using old saris to make stylish kurtas.

The show is a good pastime, though it doesn’t rank too high on the entertainment factor. I didn’t end up making a connection with any of the participants and there wasn’t too much “drama” to keep me hooked. No tantrums, no “I give up” moments, just a few tears of happiness on realizing the magic of dressing right. And the few opportunities for some cheeky moments are lost, perhaps to avoid offending sensibilities. So while Trinny and Susannah would have pronounced a certain participant’s style “slutty” without batting an eyelid, Soha and Aki were a tad more diplomatic.

Meanwhile, the fashion and style tips are quite handy for women watching the show. Even a self-confessed fashionista might get a pointer or two from the show if she watches carefully. What the show does miss out on is on the importance of accessorizing- it only gets a passing mention.

Our Verdict

What’s important about What Not to Wear India is that it’s got an Indian perspective on styling- such as the right kurtis for you- which foreign makeover shows skip. We’ve always needed a reality makeover show of “ordinary people” so this show (along with Be Blunt with Adhuna Akhtar) will be counted as the early ones. And BTW, if you’re bored of Grey’s Anatomy (Season 1 -yawn!) and Vampire Diaries (teenybopper stuff), you should switch to TLC (they all air at 10pm).

Meanwhile, I hope for another season with some drama and outrageous makeovers.

Bollywood Fashion: Tomboy casuals in Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge—Like!

When I was in college, there was no Facebook, no hot rock singers and certainly no chic-and-unstylish girls like Preity Sen (actor: Saba Azaad) in Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge.

MFK5

Since I don’t get too many opportunities to wear casuals these days and because I see a bit of my teen self in Preity, her look makes me want to go to college all over again. Just to wear those clothes, and perhaps have a Facebook romance too!

The look

Saba plays the college bore/ geek/ serious girl who hates boys, so her look is tomboyish from head to toe. Costume designer Priyanjali Lahiri has devoid Saba of any feminine touch.

MFK4

What Saba is wearing

  • Tank tops and racer backs, devoid of embellishments or prints
  • Checked shirts as jackets and sports jackets (resembling the famous Gap jackets of the 1990s)
  • Tight jeans and shorts
  • Sneakers
  • Masculine watch and pile of dark rubber bangles

So no skirts and dresses (though she does wear two party dresses). And certainly no girly accessories or clothes for this gal—no floral prints or hoops or jhumkas.

How to get Saba’s look

Step 1: To emulate Saba’s I-care-a-damn look you first need to get the right attitude. 🙂 And then work on layering.

Step 2: Start with a fitted racer back or tank top, or a sports bra. (Below: Racer back top from Mango.)

Mango-racer-back1

Step 3: Then add another layer, which could be another tank top or a plain or striped tee. Remember that you’re not layering for winter, but for casual wear. The trick is to NOT bother too much with getting the colours right. (Below: Stephanie stripe tshirt from French Connection).

FC-stephanie-stripe-tshirt

Step 4: Cover up with a checked shirt or sports jacket. (Below: Quilted hooded jacket from Levis)

levis-quilted-hooded-sweatshirt

Step 5: Wear a pair of your favourite skinny jeans. If you’ve got the legs, wear shorts. (Below: Skinny jeans from Levis, shorts from Sisley)

Step 6: Un-comb your hair, and tie random strands into a loose pony.

Step 7: Apply tinted lip balm or a nude pink matte lip colour.

And voila—ready for college!

LFW W/F 2011 Day 4: Drashta makes waves, Rehane presents unfinished garments

Drashta
Marine life has served as inspiration to fashion designers since aeons, and Drashta Sarvaiya is among the most recent ones to have caught the bait (pun intended). At her show at Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2011, Drashta’s focus on marine life reflected in the fluid silhouettes, shell cut-outs and motifs, marine prints and colours that reflect the ocean (think aqua and sea green).

Model at Drashta LFW W/F 2011 Model at Drashta LFW W/F 2011

But that wasn’t all. Drashta also played with colours and detailing as she introduced pastels (mauve, pink) and neons (electric, fuchsia) on one-shoulder short and halter neck dresses with touches like capes and crystals.

Model at Drashta LFW W/F 2011 Model at Drashta LFW W/F 2011

The most interesting bit of her collection was the expert ruching along with the quirky accessories placed on the waist and neck. The accessories were handmade pieces created from pearl finish and hot neon leather, and coral shell and fish cut-outs. Cute!

Rehane
Rehane, the designer known for her baby doll and cocktail dresses, dared to step out of her comfort zone at Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2011 with a new concept. This all-white collection was created with raw mulmul and kora fabrics and left unfinished with notes to tailors for alterations. (You could read “Check line” and “Cut here” on skirts and blouses).

Model at Rehane LFW W/F 2011 Model at Rehane LFW W/F 2011

The models walked barefoot on the ramp in slow motion, their limbs, faces and hair covered in talcum powder. Rehane later said her collection was inspired by the purity of a woman “Meera”. But we also felt that somewhere among the purity was the woman who is lost, struggling to hold on to her innocence and on the verge of being delusional.

Despite the blank colour palette, Rehane had worked meticulously on garment construction and detailing. There were rouches, gathers and pleats on blouses and yokes, uneven hemlines and even cholis with cowls. Silhouettes were mixed, as a tunic was paired with a pencil skirt and a loose cover-up had an empire line gathered body.

We left the show with mixed feelings—a tinge of sadness (the mood was sombre), but happy because we had just seen a designer’s fresh take on fashion.
