Chic 2012: Best fashion ads of the year

Fashion ecommerce sites ruled the fashion ad space in 2012. And they caught attention with the decades-old funda- Sex sells!

Myntra-Lisa Haydon-a

Myntra’s Hottest December Sale promo had gorgeous Lisa Haydon doing a striptease on primetime television. I’m sure I’m not the only one who initially mistook it for a Fastrack commercial.

The BeStylish promo was about sexy shoes and seduction. Enough to excite shoe lovers and then some!

And Tanishq brought in a refreshing change to boiler-plate jewellery advertising with their Mia commercials. Go-getter office girls dealing with real problems like parking space and not-so-good appraisals.

Special Mention: Fashion videos

Anita Dongre’s Jaipur Bride was beautifully shot and made every woman want to be an Indian bride.

Fastrack’s Like Bunnies We Multiply was funny, irreverent and unconventional. Just like the brand!

Which fashion commercial / video did you enjoy this year?

This is the first in a series of posts rounding up the Indian fashion scene in 2012.

Indulge in a “precious” bag

Each piece in Hidesign’s Blossom Collection by Alberto Ciaschini takes more than 30 hours to create, and the delicate ‘flower buds’ are embedded with Swarovski crystals. With only 60 pieces available of each design, this is luxurious craftsmanship at its best. If you’d like to indulge some more, check out Audelade’s bags of handcrafted and hand-woven fabric made of gold / silver in combination with finest quality natural leather.

Cheer in style

Skip the team jersey this T20 World Cup, and opt for more stylish clothes to show your support for your favourite team. Check out Sher Singh’s country polos that “represent” India, Australia, South Africa, West Indies and other T20 teams. And then there is FreeCultur’s T20 range of crew neck cricket-centric tees. While these tees are designed for cricket-loving men, I don’t see why women can’t wear them too!

Doll up your eyes

Highlight your gorgeous Indian eyes with some interesting products- Lakmé Eyeconic kaljal and curling mascara. The Eyeconic Kajal claims to last 10 hours, while Eyeconic Curling Mascara comes with a curling brush for defined lashes. The more interesting mascara is from Maybelline New York- it’s called the The Falsies Mascara which hopes to give a false-mascara look with more visible and fuller lashes.

Discard old season styles

I’m bored of the overtly feminine look of spring/ summer 2012. So pack up the girly prints, pastel blouses, pleated skirts and pussybow blouses. The new fashion season is here- enjoy it!

Chic 2011: My top shopping trends this year

We started shopping online… seriously

Shopping moved from malls and local markets to online stores. While flash sale sites like Fashion and You came last year, 2011 saw an explosion of online retailers selling fashion goodies. Some websites are solely online ventures, selling clothes, makeup or accessories from single (FreeCultr) or multiple brands (Myntra, B.Lab, BeStylish), while some well-known brands extended their presence with online shopping. Some websites offer fabulous steals, mindboggling variety and great clothes, so it’s a win-win for fashionistas!

Store interiors got spunky

The Quiksilver and Roxy store at Mumbai’s Phoenix Mills is a delight to visit. The brands are dedicated to the surfing culture, and their tshirts, shorts, pants and accessories like backpacks seem to have struck a chord with fans. But what I like most about the store is the surfing stamp all over. There are surf and skate boards around, wooden slats, photo frames and cut-outs of icons pasted on the wall. Just outside the Phoenix Mills (Mumbai) store, there was even a bench shaped like a surf board. Nice touch!

It was “Year of the Shoes”

There are shoes, then there are shoes. I don’t have a shoe obsession like some fashionistas do, but I do like to see shoes I haven’t seen before. This year I saw some excellent shoes by Indian accessory designers, such as Rohan Arora and Swati Modo. My personal favourite- Rohan Arora’s shoes this season had traditional nakashi craft work on the wedges, while some had cute little charms. While I don’t own any of them (yet), I’d advise any shoe-crazy woman to seriously consider some of these unique designs.
