On Shaving: Views from men and women

The best expert on shaving is a man. They shave every (working) day. They’ve seen the bad side of it- nicks, cuts, uneven shaving… So who better to discuss shaving than a man, right?

Gillette Venus shaving kits

As you can see, men’s shaving kits are a bit different from women’s due to the difference in hair and skin textures. But men need similar tools– lathering foam and a razor with blades.

The husband on shaving

When I shaved for the first time couple weeks ago (read my blog post on my first shaving experience) and informed the husband, his immediate reaction was, “Did you cut yourself???”

I laughed and replied “NO!”

“So did it hurt or poke you?”

“What?! Nooooo!”

Pause.

“It was quite a pleasant experience actually,” I continued. “I didn’t feel a thing, because of the soft protective cushions around the blades.”

Anyways, later that day, the husband and I compared notes on our shaving experiences. Here’s what’s similar and what’s different between shaving for men and women.

Comparing shaving experiences

Nicks and cuts: Ladies, this one is entirely for men. Yay! From teen boys to grown men, several men often cutting themselves while shaving. Thanks to the cushioning, chances of us girls getting cut while shaving are near zero.

Hair change after shaving: S confirmed his hair thickness or growth never changed and I confirmed that too! My regrown hair is exactly the same as it was pre-shaving.

Itch or No Itch?: Can you imagine men walking around with itchy faces every day? Me neither. Ditto with shaving for women- I didn’t get any itching. I did feel a slight discomfort when I wore a very skinny pair of jeans the day after I shaved my legs, but that was mostly because of the humidity and the thick fabric. And the discomfort lasted all of two minutes with no urge to itch.

Bad skin: Nope, shaving didn’t affect his skin or mine (and mine is sensitive). Men love a good aftershave lotion (and so do women, wink wink), but women’s “aftershave” is nothing but a good moisturiser suited for their skin type and perhaps a soothing lotion like aloe vera or calamine lotion.

Shaving vs waxing vs hair removal creams

Men don’t have other options to get rid of facial hair, like us women. I’ve tried waxing regularly and depilatory (or hair removal) creams for emergencies. Even after all these years, waxing is painful. And I’m still not comfortable going to local parlours or high-end salons alike (for hygiene reasons).

As for depilatory creams, I’ve been careful with them but I have felt a slight burn when I kept it on for a few seconds longer than mentioned on the packaging. That’s the chemicals at work. 🙁 And the looooooong list of precautions that are printed on a cream’s packaging is quite unnerving. Seems like anything could cause a reaction!?

I’ve shaved a few times already and I’m going to continue- it’s quick, comfy and painless. Time to #Subscribe to Smooth everyday!

You can buy the complete shaving kit on Flipkart, or buy the razor and cartridges separately.

Chic News: It’s almost official, H&M is coming to India (Bonus: Fun facts about the brand)

Chic News: It’s almost official, H&M is coming to India (Bonus: Fun facts about the brand)

Ladies, in the midst of the rising summer temperatures and terrifying “market conditions”, there is a ray of hope in the form of good old-fashioned shopping news. H&M is on its way to India!

H&M Divided images

(From H&M’s Spring Summer 2013 campaign)

This time the company means business, with Fredrik Olsson (head of expansion) at  Hennes & Mauritz stating that they are looking to open 50 stores in India. That’s right– FIFTY!

Olsson also said the had already approached the Indian government for the initial investment of $130 million. Given how super quickly our bureaucracy works (ahem!), the first store could take a while. But hey, who’s complaining as long as H&M is really coming! I’m hoping the prices and styles are as great as they are globally, especially in Asia.

While the news sinks in, here are some facts you need to know about H&M:

  • H&M is a fast fashion brand (like Zara), with focus on trends, quality and great prices (of course!). They sell to both men and women.
  • H&M has over 2800 stores worldwide across 49 countries. (They recently opened their first store in Chile.)
  • H&M often collaborates with style icons for limited edition lines and collections. They’ve worked with everyone from David Beckham to Beyonce to Versace to Karl Lagerfeld.
  • Helen Hunt wore an H&M gown to the Oscars this year, shocking fashionistas, bloggers, critics and everyone else.
  • And oh, H&M debuted at Paris Fashion Week in February. Yet another shock as a fast fashion brand presented their collection in the company of luxury houses.

Chic Opinion: Why Indian men are obsessed with shoes

Chic Opinion: Why Indian men are obsessed with shoes

It’s true– Indian men love shoes, and they love them more than Indian women. Here’s proof:

Google Trends- shoes for men

This graph shows the relative volume of searches done in the past one year in India for the terms “men shoes” and “women shoes”. Terms like “shoes for men” and “shoes for women” show similar trends. Surprised? So was I!

As the Google trend chart indicates, men’s shoes are way more popular than women’s shoes in India (globally the search trend is just the opposite). So does that mean Indian men are more interested in shoes than women? Well, it does seem to be so.

With most Indian women complaining that the guys here are just not fashionable, this little statistic has been puzzling me for a while now. Most women I spoke to said they knew guys who loved shoes but just didn’t know why.

image

To get some answers, I went straight to the source- guys I know who love shoes. This includes a colleague who loves wearing coloured shoes to work (our office dress code is smart casual) and a couple of friends. Here’s what they had to say:

Men have fewer fashion choices or options to change their look. There’s tshirts and shirts, jeans and trousers on a normal day. So how do you get some variety? With accessories, specifically shoes.

image

Watches are expensive, ties are almost redundant and in India you don’t get to experiment much with jewellery like cuff links or chains. Changing the shoes are an easy and inexpensive way to update a look.

Guys like to stick to specific types of shirts or styles (they even buy multiple pieces of a single garment at one time), and often repeat jeans throughout the week, so the lack of variety is made up with a change in footwear.

I think this seems to be a reasonable enough explanation. What do you think?

PS- Ladies, next time your man complains about your footwear collection, point to his shoe rack. And men, there’s nothing to be ashamed about- women completely understand what shoe love is, so admit it. 🙂

Hollywood Fashion: Key looks and lessons from Skyfall

Hollywood Fashion: Key looks and lessons from Skyfall

James Bond (Daniel Craig) in The O’Connor suit

The two-buttoned, peak lapelled suit that you see Daniel Craig wearing in Skyfall is called The O’Connor and is designed by designer and film-maker Tom Ford. Yep, in the 23rd Bond film, James Bond has been dressed by an American designer, a surprising choice since the Brits are best known for their tailoring skills.

Danien Craig in Skyfall

The Tom Ford suits “move” with Daniel Craig, enabling him to fight on top of trains and run through the London underground unhindered. What they don’t help with is alcoholism and poor marksmanship (there’s only so much a suit can do, after all).

Nevertheless, James Bond never misses a fashion beat, wearing a classic timepiece (Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M Skyfall Limited Edition watch) and adjusting his cufflinks in the midst of serious action. 🙂

Daniel Craig in Skyfall

Fashion Lesson:

Well-built man + smart suit = Handsome! The right fit and attention to detail are an added bonus.

Javier Bardem (Silva) in printed shirt

Javier Bardem in Skyfall

That printed shirt is a Prada– a first for a Bond villain! Silva’s OTT blondness and false teeth mask his battle scars (physical and emotional), and because he’s Latino, his style’s a bit more flamboyant than Bond. Hence he’s dressed in lighter colours and prints, and dyes his hair blond.

Fashion Lesson:

Men can wear prints without looking like they’re in Hawaii. Wear a printed shirt below a jacket, blazer or waistcoat, and you’re set to go.

Berenice Marlohe (Severine) in embellished cocktail gown

Berenice Marlohe’s Swarovski-studded gown for the casino scene reportedly took six months to create, and it’s GORGEOUS!

Berenice Marlohe in Skyfall

The glittering crystals on the sheer back, sleeves and along Berenice’s legs create a tattoo-like effect. Her dark berry lips and nails are an attempt to hide the sadness in her heavily-lined eyes. This scene is hands down the fashion high point in the movie.

According to costume designer Jany Temine, the embellished gown features 60,000 crystals– all applied by hand. If this wasn’t a Bond film, I’d say the gown was quite a dent on the film’s budget.

Fashion Lesson:

The charming, elegant, mysterious woman is still around in the 21st century, and you can be her. Flaunt your sexiest curves, play with sheer, wear black, opt for striking makeup, and watch heads turn.

Naomie Harris (Eve Moneypenny) in bright colours

Naomie Harris in Skyfall

Eve Moneypenny is a new recruit to the service, still learning the ropes of espionage. She doesn’t ooze sex appeal, but her grace and confidence makes her attractive. Further proof lies in her choice of colours- bright orange, fuschia, mustard– completely unheard-of colours in a staid working environment. Her unusual picks include accessories like a wide brown belt and black booties (my favourite!).

Naomie Harris in Skyfall

Fashion Lesson:

Go ahead, take some risks. Dress bold, but not provocative. Be smart, not sexy. And there- you’ve made an impression!

Judi Dench (M) in tweed jacket

Given the seniority and nature of her job, M power dresses with a difference. Shoulder pads and sharp blazers are not for her. Instead she chooses sensible skirt suits and almost-invisible jewellery for a commanding presence.

Judi Dench in Skyfall

Fashion Lesson:

If you want to look like your boss’s boss, dress the part by focusing on key separates in black, navy blue and grey. Jackets, textured and subtly-detailed blazers make the right statement at work. And oh, do dress your age!

It’s Women’s Day today! So let’s talk about men

It’s Women’s Day today! So let’s talk about men

It’s International Women’s Day today, but I’m not one to celebrate it. You can read my rant against Women’s Day here.

So to “celebrate” Women’s Day, I’ve decided to focus on men. This is a special post especially for men, based on inputs from girl friends and Speaking Chic readers. They’ve shared their views on what they like best about men (from the fashion POV). In short, they answer the question—when and how do men look their best?

This post is meant for the guys, so I’ve addressed the men, not the ladies.

Guys, here goes:

Start with the jackets: Women love men in dinner jackets, formal jackets and stylish casual jackets. My personal favourite these days is the light linen jacket like the one SRK wore in Don 2. Tres chic! (Below: Jacket from Zara)

 Zara jacket with buckle collar

Impress with your fragrance: Not one, not two, but three women told me they love fresh, clean, aquatic scents (I do too)! Which means CK’s Eternity for Men Aqua is a hands-down winner.

CK Eternity for Men Aqua

Dress down once in a while: While women love men dressed formally, they also like the guys to chill out once in a while. So wear casual shirts with sleeves rolled up, geeky tees with reference to popular culture and coloured polo tees. (Below: T-shirt from Guru).

Guru tshirt A/W 2011

Don’t forget to groom yourself: Well-groomed nails are a must. One reader even recommended manicures for guys. Also on the list are soft hands, shaven face and moisturised lips. (Below: L’Occitane Shea Butter hand cream, The Body Shop lip balm).

Body Shop lip balmLOcccitane hand cream

Hair is important: Shiny, glossy hair is awesome. So is the neat and clean gelled look. But not too spiked, thank you!

Accessorise: Sport classy belts with brands/ logos, and wrist accessories like bracelets/ kadas. My current favourite is an oblong dial watch with a leather strap. (Below: Watch from Fossil)

Fossil Roman Leather Watch Black

Rock those jeans: If a guy can pull off well-fitted jeans (not the skinny ones), the woman will be super happy! That’s because it shows the guy is healthy and fit. And we all like that, don’t we? (Below: Look from Diesel)

Diesel jeans

Try on new trends: Women like to see men who are “with it”. Think coloured shoes, boots, fresh colours, slim fits, grunge and lots more.

Health is wealth: Toned biceps, flattish abs, muscular legs. A good body and confidence can pull off almost every look. So being healthy and strong will make you look young, haute and happening! Drool… 😉

Guys—which of these looks do you wear most often?

Van Heusen India Mens Week 2011: Looks and styles for all guys

Van Heusen India Mens Week 2011 just concluded in New Delhi, and it was every fashion-conscious guy’s delight. (Women loved the shows too, for obvious reasons… drool!).

There were some fabulous collections and clothes for all guys, and we think every guy would be spoilt for choice! (Why should only women get a range of fashion options, right?).

So we thought it would be fun to match the guys we know with the clothes they’d like to wear. And the results of our little experiment are worth sharing. For obvious reasons we’re not revealing the names of the guys here, just their fashion attitude. Take a look and tell us if you know such guys.

For the guy who likes colour

He likes bright colours—as the mainstay of his look or just to break the monotony.

Even geeks have a style beyond the dark and thick glasses. Separates carelessly thrown together with a book bag is the modern geek.

For the rebel

Hoodies may have got a bad name recently, but they’re not the same anymore. There’s more than one on a tee, it’s in front, or it’s with a fitted sweatshirt. Either ways, the hoodie still seems to say “I don’t care”.

LFW W/F 2011 Day 5: Manish Malhotra dazzles in the grand finale

It was an elaborate set made of giant wooden frames and a clock-mechanism appearance– perfect for the final show of the five-day extravaganza Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2011.

Manish Malhotra at LFW W/F 2011

Manish Malhotra’s collection was as dramatic as any Bollywood movie. Making the most of chikan work and silver and resham embroidery, the ace designer created a collection of breathtaking festive and wedding wear that introduced a few new elements while retaining the Manish Malhotra signature.

The silhouette for women was of graceful panels and flared lehengas and gowns. Manish paired swirling lehengas, well-constructed cholis and saris for women, with elegant jackets and corset blouses. Embellishments were everywhere– on the sleeves, down the front, on jackets and cholis, along with multiple borders.

Model at Manish Malhotra- LFW W/F 2011 Model at Manish Malhotra- LFW W/F 2011

Manish kept the colours tones festive with white and candy floss pink, in contrast to black, wine, gold, pale grey, metallics and cherry red. We noted that the designer had mixed, matched and clashed colours for a strong impact. For instance, a grey kurta with a longer bright pink lining, or orange and pink in the same outfit! The opulent clothes were stitched from rich fabrics like lace, chiffon, silk, net and velvet, while most dupattas were kept sheer.

Model at Manish Malhotra- LFW W/F 2011 Model at Manish Malhotra- LFW W/F 2011

For men we saw sherwanis and long coats with wide cuffs, pleats and gathers, even as some coats were lean and layered over kurtas. The colours were masculine (black, grey, wine), albeit with a hint of fuchsia for collars and cuffs.

And oh, in case you haven’t heard already, Kareena Kapoor was the showstopper (she is also the face of Lakme Absolute, on which Manish’s collection was based).

Some of the ideas from Manish Malhotra’s show we’d like to steal immediately:
1. Two dupattas for a single outfit… nice! (My mom earlier spotted this on Shah Rukh Khan in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham)

2. Thick/ multiple borders

3. Neutral/ pastel outfits with a pop of colour in the detailing, jacket or dupatta

LFW W/F 2011 Day 2: Narendra Kumar jazzes up menswear with a swingin’ show

There was live music, dancing and some very polished gentlemen. No, it wasn’t a dance club from the mid 20th century, but Narendra Kumar’s show at Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2011. The collection, presented to a live rendition of Frank Sinatra’s Fly me to the moon, comprised formal evening wear for men.

It was one of the few shows we girls could swoon, whistle and cheer (it was a virtually all-male show). Each model did a little jig or dance step on head ramp, spreading the joy of music and rhythm.

Narendra Kumar at LFW W/F 2011

The collection’s focus was bespoke suits (especially classy tuxedos). The colours were beyond black—deep sapphire, wine, green, pale pink, midnight blue, along with neutrals. The men looked dapper in single and double breasted jackets, with broad, narrow, peak and notched lapels. The tuxedo lapels were inspired by Japanese kimonos, while we also saw draped and cut away collar jackets and the iconic “smoking”. The trousers were sexily slim with turn-ups.

Namit Khanna at Narendra Kumar LFW W/F 2011 Narendra Kumar at LFW W/F 2011 Narendra Kumar at LFW W/F 2011

The fabrics were just as luxurious with Dupion silks, velvet, smooth Ari silk, patterned and textured handloom silks and brocades. The beautiful jackets had hand and machine embroidery, quilting, appliqués and motifs from the Art Deco and Nouveau periods.

We were almost disappointed when the fun show came to an end, though Kabir Bedi in a white brocade tux and some more singing provided some cheer. 🙂
