Shopping spree: Accessories (belts, shoes, bags) and makeup galore!

You can’t shop fashion unless you’ve got the right accessories and makeup to go with your clothes! Here are my top accessory picks from the shopping I did on my Spanish holiday:

Shoes: Studded sandals and brogues

Studded sandals from Shana Brogues

Jewellery: Leaf necklace

(Note to self: Gold polish still rules the accessories world.)

Leaf necklace from Bershka

Belts for all occasions:

Super wide to slim…

Belts: white, purple, lace, black

Bags:

The floral summer tote and Blanco clutch define cute-n-casual chic.

Bags for summer

Makeup haul: Lips, eyes, face, nails… it’s all there!

 Makeup haul from Spain

Note the brands we’re missing here in India: Bobbi Brown, NARS and Sephora. I wasn’t going to let some of the world’s best makeup pass me by! BTW, the Bobbi Brown foundation is flawless and invisible, like second skin. No kidding.

Smashbox lip gloss set: I L.O.V.E [heart] lip glosses, and I got this Smashbox set for just Rs 1000 (approx).

Smahbox lip gloss set

NARS Blush: Makes me blush! 😉 Also bought orange-red lip colour in pencil form.

Chic wedding makeup: Mesmerising Metallic

If you’re going to a wedding this winter, your sari, lehenga or kurta-churidar is most likely to be embroidered in gold. After all, zardosi, gota embroideries and everything gold is in vogue this season.

And the best makeup to complement Indian wear this season is to metallic. We show you how in Speaking Chic’s Mesmerising Metallic makeup guide:

Face

If you can carry off a bronzer on your skin, then bring it on. Or stay safe with your oft-used blush.

Eyes

Lancome metallic eyeshadow PosePlay up the metallic tones with the right eye makeup. Here’s how:

Sweep metallic eye shadow over your eyelid. (Check out Lancome’s Sensational Effects Eye Shadow in Pose).
Or, if you want to add more colour, cover your upper eyelid in a colour that matches your outfit (pink, purple or green). Then add a dot of golden/ metallic eye shadow/ shimmer on the inner corners of your eyes.

Lips

Avoid pinks and purples; instead use an earthy lip colour and add a touch of gold (lip gloss or shimmer) only to the centre of your lips. (Try Avon lipsticks in metallic shades.)

Hair

Moms are bound to have lovely hair ornaments (like maang tikkas) they hardly wore. Borrow a gold-themed one for the wedding, while minimising other accessories (you don’t want to overdo the bling, right?).

Check your makeup in the mirror once, smile, and you’re set for the wedding. 🙂

Are you ready to go metallic for the next wedding?

Fashion News: Elle 18 is back with Color Bombs!

Remember Elle 18? The cool makeup brand with funky ads and great colours we bought years ago after a boring college lecture? The brand disappeared a while ago, but they’re back now with new explosive colours (and names) for eyes, lips and nails.

Their makeup products:

Elle 18 Nail Pops No 14 nail polish Elle 18 Color Burst lipstick Baked Peach Elle 18 Lip Smoothie-Melon Flame

No. 14 Nail Pop (nail polish); Color Burst (lipstick) in Baked Peach; Lip Smoothie (lip gloss) in Melon Flame

Elle 18 Kajal Elle 18 Eye Sparkler Purple Pataka Elle 18 Black out! Liner

Kajal; Purple Pataka Eye Sparkler (eye crayon); Black Out! Liner

The products come with very affordable price tags, ideal for cash-strapped college students (nail pops for Rs 45, lip smoothies for Rs 85). And any makeup junkie would love to have fun with the colours. I have my eye on some nail pops (No. 16 and 24) and eye sparklers (Grey Gun Powder).

Guide to chic Diwali makeup: Part 1

Makeup idea 1: Flicked liner, glossy lips

If you loved the 50s and 60s, you’ll love the flicked liner look. Give it a contemporary take with glossy lips. Check out Sophie Choudhary’s makeup in the pictures below. (Note the flicked-out liner in the second picture).

Speaking Chic tip: Pallavi Symons, Lakme Studio makeup expert, says: “Using the last lash as your guideline, create a fluid upward stroke with a light hand. Then continue the line inward toward the corner of your eye.”

Hair idea 1: Fun with accessories

Tie a loose or low pony, and use hair accessories to dress up your tresses. We recommend cute hair clips and pins, hair bands, or just a ribbon! Vidya Malavade has cleverly used a hair band to push back her bangs and has brought her long hair over the shoulder to resemble a side-pony.

Speaking Chic tip: Experiment with your hair and accessories before you decide on a style. So no last minute mess!

Chic Makeup: Lakme’s Gypsy collection (Part 1)

Speaking Chic spent a few days trying out Lakme’s latest makeup range: the Gypsy collection. Here’s the first part of our review.

About the Gypsy Collection by Lakme

The idea behind Lakme’s Gypsy collection, made in collaboration with designer Malini Ramani, is to take Indian women a makeup range that will see them through the festive season: Diwali, weddings, Christmas, New Year and some more weddings (up to January).

Lakme's Gypsy collection of makeupWhat’s in the collection

Lipsticks, lip glosses, lip colours, blush, eye shadow, kajal, nail polish.

Colours

Mostly earthy undertones, with several vibrant colours. Each makeup product has a distinct colour palette.

Lips: Enrich Satin Lip Color

I started with the Enrich Satin Lip Color lipsticks and discovered, much to my delight, that they did feel like satin on my lips, as the name suggests. The colours ranged from rust to brown. I liked most of the colours (10 in all), and they’re bound to please women of all ages.

Application was easy and the colour came out well in the first coat itself. With just a couple of coats, the lipsticks stayed in place for 5-6 hours, and even after a meal. Lakme says that these lipsticks contain sunscreen, vitamins and olive extracts for soft and smooth lips. Must say that the lipsticks certainly didn’t leave my lips dry.

Sheer Satin Lip Gloss

I love lip glosses, and I can’t imagine life without them. The eight shades of Lakme’s Sheer Satin Lip Gloss were enough to satisfy my thirst for lip glosses, and I liked the slight metallic sheen some of them had. They lasted long (though not as long as the lipsticks), and smelled and tasted great. 😉 My favourite shade: No. 11.

Lip Palette

Lakme Gypsy collection lip palette

Lakme’s Lip Palette of five very earthy brown shades comes with a lip brush that will require basic skills, which you can learn in just couple of minutes. Some of the shades were similar to the Enrich Satin Lip Color lipsticks, but the difference was that these are slightly glossier. Most of the shades are suitable for women of all skin tones. (Hence makes a great Diwali gift.)
