Bollywood Fashion: Key pieces from Jab Tak Hai Jaan (and how to wear them)

Monotone outfits

Worn by: Katrina Kaif

As a British upper class business woman who moves around in a chauffer-driven Rolls Royce, Katrina Kaif’s character Meera’s style is a modern take on elegance. She sticks to simple silhouettes and colours, with almost zero feminine frills.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan- Katrina Kaif

How to wear:

Opt for comfortable A-line and shift silhouettes in knee-length dresses and coats. Choose bold colours like red, blue and green. Make sure there is only one eye-catching colour in your ensemble.

Where to buy: Coat from United Colors of Benetton, dress from Sisley

Jackets- puffed and leather

Worn by: Katrina Kaif, Anushka Sharma, Shahrukh Khan

Katrina covers up a Manish Malhotra lehenga on a snowy day with a bright red quilted anorak, while both women wear vintage-style leather jackets on different occasions. Meanwhile, Shahrukh Khan’s jackets are limited to light woollens and vests in muted colours like grey and dark blue.

Boots for women

Worn by: Katrina Kaif, Anushka Sharma

While Katrina pairs knee-length boots with short skirts in winter (really!), Anushka Sharma wears outdoorsy laced boots meant for camping.

How to wear:

Very few women can carry off knee-length boots, so I suggest ankle and calf-length boots with jeans instead. The laced heavy boots are for the adventurous types or those living in the mountains.

Bollywood Fashion: Katrina Kaif is edgy rockgirl in Mere Brother ki Dulhan? Not!

For those who haven’t seen Mere Brother ki Dulhan yet—Katrina Kaif attempts a rocker act for a few minutes in the film. Unfortunately, neither her performance as a rocker is convincing, nor is her look what we expect from a rockstar. However, the film’s costume design team has tried to give her a distinct look that resembles a girl walking on the wild side. (Note: The costume design credits for the movie list Rocky S, Harmeet Sethi and Neha Bhatnagar; we assume Rocky S styled Katrina Kaif. If you believe otherwise, please leave a comment below).

Katrina Kaif Mere Brother ki Dulhan

Dimple aka Katrina Kaif’s s style statement
As a girl on the wild side (more than a rocker chick), you’ll see Katrina Kaif in tight shorts and coloured pants with boots, printed tees and uncombed hair. But no unusual piercings, and the tattoo on her lower back was tame! One of the brands we spotted was the very British Jack Wills.

Katrina Kaif Mere Brother ki Dulhan

In the rest of the film, Katrina’s style varies. In couple scenes, she’s in patiala salwar and ill-fitting kurtis, in some you’ll see layered tight tank tops with cropped pants (like Kareena Kapoor in Golmaal 3). And in others, she’s wearing pleasant blouses. Her most unusual look was a floral dresses with tan boots. Bold pairing, we dare say!

Accessories
Katrina has piled on colourful angles as she strums her electric guitar in Dhunki, and she sports dangling earrings when she “grows up”. They add a feminine touch and draw attention to her lovely face. We like her bang-on-trend long pendants and charm necklaces worn throughout the film.

Hair and makeup
As rocker girl, Katrina’s hair is wild, unkempt and dark. Her lips are mostly nude, though her makeup artist has given her intense smokey eyes both on the lid and below the eyes.

katrina-rockstar1

In the rest of the movie, Katrina’s makeup is mostly nude, and her hair is straighter. We especially liked the short-to-long bangs.

Our verdict on Katrina Kaif
While Katrina Kaif’s style statement in Mere Brother ki Dulhan is varied and a bit confusing, we did like some of the clothes she wore, especially like the feminine tops. We bet a number of girls will soon be asking where they can buy those clothes. And oh, while her acting performance is best left unrated, she looks gorgeous!

Imran Khan and Ali Zafar

What Imran is wearing: Mostly checkered shirts with plain white tees… yawn!

What Ali is wearing: T-shirts with blazers…huh? Bizarre!

What do you think of Katrina Kaif’s style statement in Mere Brother ki Dulhan—hit or miss?

Chic Beauty Trends: Funky nails, Bollywood’s minimal makeup look

On my recent trip to Spain, I noticed that a lot of senoritas experimented with clothes and makeup. Among other (mostly fashion) trends in Spain, I spotted brightly-coloured nails. But the nail trend I I immediately wanted to try was this one:

funky coloured nails

I’d like to call this the ring-finger manicure. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Select two nail colours from the same “colour” family (eg pinks, purples, bronzes etc). The colours should be contrasting or be several “shades” apart.
  2. Apply the lighter colour on all fingers except the ring fingers.
  3. Apply the darker shade on the ring fingers.
  4. Flaunt your nails!

Bollywood’s no makeup look: seen on Jacqueline Fernandes, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma

I saw two movies recently—Murder 2 and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. In both movies, the leading ladies (Jacqueline Fernandes and Katrina Kaif) looked fabulous and radiant, despite almost-zero makeup.

Jacqueline Fernandes in Murder2

Both Jacqueline and Katrina have clearly followed a great beauty routine and diet (and hired an awesome cosmetologist) to get great skin, which always helps. 🙂 For the movie, they applied a natural-finish foundation and not much else. Jacqueline also added a hint of smokey eyeshadow and a good deal of mascara while Katrina’s lips were probably pampered with a good lip balm. The casual looks were perfectly complemented with tousled, unkempt hair.

Meanwhile we also spotted Anushka Sharma at a Nivea event with a similar look, finished with a touch of gloss.

Results: Radiant skin—au naturel!

Chic Interview: Arjun Bhasin takes Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara on a fashion trip

For costume designer Arjun Bhasin,  Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (ZNMD) was perhaps a mammoth project. It’s a movie with five carefully-etched leads that demand diverse looks—clothes, accessories, the works. What’s more, the cast is fashionable and near the top of the Bollywood ladder—Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol, Katrina Kaif and Kalki Koechlin.

Currently working on Life of Pi, Arjun Bhasin talks to Speaking Chic Costume designer Arjun Bhasin for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaraabout working with Farhan and Zoya Akhtar, and shares the various fashion stories playing in the movie.

You have worked on earlier movie projects with Farhan and Zoya Akhtar as well as the actors. How different was the experience with them this time?
For ZNMD, the entire setup was different—we were shooting in Spain, and working with a smaller crew. Hence a  lot of the work and styling was much more organic– we were all grabbing things and working at a completely difference pace. But Zoya and I know each other well and I know exactly what she wants. As for the lead actors, I’ve worked with three of them earlier [Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol], and I wanted to put new spins on them, especially Farhan and Hrithik.

The three male lead actors Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol are all stylish in their own way. Hrithik, for instance, is a style icon, How difficult was it for you to try something new with them?
Not at all. Actors like to change and try different things–hair style, clothes, looks etc. Also, I always let the script and characterisation dictate what an actor should wear. So if the same character would be played by another actor, I would keep the same clothes/ look.

ZNMD is your first movie project with Kalki Kechlin and Katrina Kaif. What are the distinct looks have you created for them?
Kalki Koechlin plays a spoilt rich girl who’s into high fashion. Kalki has such an amazing fashion body—she can carry off jumpsuits with heels, and short dresses. I wanted her to be a bit free, while being a bit overdressed. Her dressing is also a kind of tongue-in-cheek joke on fashion.

Katrina Kaif is an island girl and loves to mix and match. So she could combine a long dress from a street market with a blazer and boots, or carry off a sadhu necklace at a beach.

ZNMD actors- Hrithik Roshan, Farhan AKhtar, Abhay Deol

Which brands are the actors wearing in the movie? Being a stylish movie, which clothes and accessories should fashion lovers look out for (such as the Lady Dior in Aisha)?
The brands in the movie are chosen because they met our specific clothing and accessory needs.
For instance, Hrithik is wearing Tod’s and Bottega Veneta. He has an amazing look with lots of supershort cropped shirts, and especially when he lands at Barcelona airport—chambray shirt, trench coat and lace-up shoes.

Farhan’s character is a bit different, so he could be wearing Dior sunglasses and a kurta from Mumbai’s Managaldas market. Abhay (as Kabir) plays with colours so he’s got a lot of Paul Smith, which he pairs with slim pants from Etro.

Even though Kalki’s character Natasha is into high fashion, I’ve used a lot of high street wear and made it look like high fashion. Her clothes are from brands like Miss Sixty, and she’s wearing a Diesel jumpsuit. But her bag is from Tod’s, and you’ll also see her Hermes Kelly bag (which has a character of its own in the movie!).

Zindagi na milegi dobara poster

Which are your favourite looks from the movie?
I absolutely love Farhan and Katrina’s looks in the movie, since the are closest to my personal style, it’s kinda hippy. For example, Farhan wears kolhapuris with a suit!

Chic Insider: Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara looks decoded!

Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Farhan Akhtar, Katrina Kaif and Kalki Koechlin—the cast of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (ZNMD) have been rocking the promos and we’re enjoying what we see (fashion-wise)—from Farhan’s hats, Kalki’s sleek bangs, to Katrina’s free-spirited vibe.

Zindagi na milegi dobara poster

Curious about the five looks, we spoke to the styling team of ZNMD for a better perspective on the characters and how their traits translate into their screen persona. Arjun Bhasin, the costume designer for ZNMD explained the fashion looks while Osh Bhabani, Avan Contractor and Walter Dorairaj (the b:blunt stylists), told us the story behind the hair styles.

Here’s what the experts tell us (Fashion by Arjun Bhassin, Hair by b:blunt team):

Abhay Deol as Kabir
Fashion: Kabir is a funky rich kid with a sense of humour, so his personality and clothes are colourful!
Hair:  Being a rich guy, Kabir’s look is strong and edgy. So we’ve given him a lot of texture that’s fashionable, classy and tasteful.

Hrithik Roshan as Arjun
Fashion: Hrithik (as Arjun) is a chic London investment banker who’s bit of a control freak so his clothes are tailored, controlled, crisp and perfect.
Hair: Arjun’s character starts off almost straitjacketed. He’s a perfectionist which reflects in his style, though he becomes more relaxed after he meets Laila (Katrina). His hair style goes from smooth and and sophisticated to casual.

Farhan Akhtar as Imraan
Fashion: Imraan’s a bohemian, eclectic, romantic poet. So he’s bit of a hippy  and that reflects in his wardrobe—so he wears a kurta from a local market with designer sunglasses.
Hair: Imraan is effortless, fresh and lively, so the hair style is boho-inspired and has got a boyish feel. We’ve played with Farhan’s natural movement and texture, going from wavy to curly.

(Below: b:blunt stylist Avan Contractor working on Farhan Akhtar’s hair on the sets of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara).

Farhan Akhtar hair style in Zindagi na milegi dobara

Kalki Koechlin as Natasha
Fashion: Kalki is a super spoilt rich girl from Mumbai, hot on the trail of designers with kickass bags and shoes.
Hair: Natasha is very chic and classy. Totally inspired by designer outfits, her look just screams expensive!

(Below: b:blunt stylist Walter Dorairaj styling Kalki Koechlin’s hair while shooting for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara).

Kalki Koechlin hair stylie in Zindagi na milegi dobara

Katrina Kaif as Laila
Fashion: Katrina Kaif as Laila is a bohemian traveller and an island girl. She buys beautiful clothes everywhere and mixes them up. She’s not a designer girl—she more casual and sexy, and has a got a “Kate Moss” vibe.
Hair: Laila is a free spirit  and “live in the moment”  kind of girl. Since she has born and brought up abroad, she is very modern and boho, which translates into her hair style through beautiful movement, textured feel and the longish length.

Chic Poll: Red carpet gown: yeah or no way?

Have you ever worn a gown? Or even been to a party or event where you need to wear one? You know what we mean—red carpet events are like the awards ceremonies or glam celebrations where stars and wannabes spend hours getting dressed, walk down a small carpet-laden path and pose for pictures, the women mostly in gowns.

Closer home, the sari was the red carpet garment of choice for decades, till a new breed of actors appeared on the scene: Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Bipasha Basu. They’re smart, they’re savvy and they love their designer gowns.

Below (left to right): From Gauri & Nainika’s LFW S/R 2011 collection; from S&N Drape’s LFW S/R 2011 collection

Sure, evening wear gowns look great, glamourous and sexy, but how many of us have either worn one or even had an opportunity to

wear one? In the few parties I’ve attended, I barely saw any women wearing gowns– and why should they? You need to be statuesque,

slim and pretty much in shape to carry them off. If you get your jewellery wrong, or your hair, the whole look seems out of whack.

So the good news is– everyone’s among the glitterati is either wearing floor-length gowns or making them (at Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2011, we lost count of the number of designers with gowns in their collection). The bad news– we’ve hardly seen women like you and me wearing them, even at posh dos. Dresses—yes, gowns—nope!

And besides, how many “red carpet” events do us ordinary women attend anyways?

Which brings us to our fashion poll: how many of you wear gowns? Or have you ever worn a gown? Do you think you’ll ever wear one?

Katrina on Bigg Boss: What’s she wearing?!

Katrina Kaif (currently of Sheela ki jawani fame) appeared on Bigg Boss 4 Friday night to promote her upcoming film Tees Maar Khan. While her off-screen wardrobe hasn’t been too bad recently, Katrina Kaif surprised us with her poor choice of outfit.

It was a red floor-length gown, sari-inspired (see the pallu and the draping), and it was worn over a strapless blouse. Or was it a sari inspired by a gown?

Katrina Kaif on Bigg Boss 4 red gown Katrina Kaif on Bigg Boss 4 red gown

The outfit was completely out of place on Bigg Boss 4, especially since Salman Khan’s wardrobe on the show is so casual. Gowns are best worn at red carpet events.

Also, Katrina is a big-boned girl, and the outfit draws attention to her broad hips. (Of course, if she’s okay with showing off her hips, we got no problem either!). Great collarbones and arms though.

But mostly, the outfit just sucks. After three days, we’re still not sure what it is, and the average Indian viewer would be just as confused.

An aside: Ace designer Tarun Tahiliani’s sari-gowns have been around for a while now, and while this might be designer’s take on the sari-gown, it fails miserably both as a sari and as a gown.

Meanwhile, we liked director Farah Khan’s casual yet sensible approach to dressing. Her kurta seems comfortable and practical, and the fit is just right for her body type.

What do you think of Katrina Kaif’s outfit on Bigg Boss 4?

Katrina’s Bollywood fashion jhatka: Is it a sari or a skirt?

While Sheela ki Jawani (aka Sheila ki Jawani) rocks the charts, Katrina Kaif seems to be rocking on the Bollywood fashion front with a confusing outfit in the chartbusting song from Tees Maar Khan. So what on earth is that pink thing? Is it a sari, is it a skirt, or is it a cutoff lehenga?

Katrina kaif half sari in Sheela ki Jawani

It’s none of them, folks. It’s what the fashion world is calling a half-sari. What it comprises: a knee-length underskirt/ petticoat (or whatever fancy-shmancy name you want to give it), and a “sari” that’s not the sari’s length, but shorter and not even the same width as the traditional sari. It looks like something’s missing. Length, fabric…and a wearable garment.

We asked some people about their opinion on the half-sari concept. Some of the spontaneous reactions:

“It’s neither this nor that! Awful!”

“It would look stupid off-screen.”

“I wouldn’t want to wear that, but it might just become a hot trend.”

It’s worth noting that Tees Maar Khan costume designer is Aki Narula, and not Manish Malhotra, which is a refreshing change.

Meanwhile Katrina Kaif rocks another look in Sheela ki Jawani: loose white shirt with black shorts, very similar to what Veena Malik wore on Bigg Boss the other day.
