Bollywood Fashion Guide: Kangana Ranaut in Tanu Weds Manu Returns

In my previous blog post, I did a look breakdown of Deepika Padukone’s indo-chic look in Piku. In Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Kangana Ranaut’s character Tanuja Trivedi (Tanu) is also seen in contemporary Indian wear but her definition of indo-chic is drastically different from Piku’s style.

Kangana Ranaut Tanu Weds Manu Returns

Tanu is a free-spirited quirky girl who loves having fun. As a married woman in London, she opts for Indian styles. So she wears saris in public, complete with mangalsutra and very noticeable sindoor. Her saris are mostly retro-style lacey ones, and in the opening scene she has bundled up in a beige trench coat over her sari.

Once back in India, the pre-marriage Tanu takes over, and she’s back to her colourful self. In the earlier film Tanu Weds Manu Kangana Ranaut opted mostly for greens and blues, but in this film her look is bolder than ever, choosing bright pinks and oranges.

Bright printed or crushed dupatta

Accessories: Jhumkas (her favourite carried forward from Tanu Weds Manu), necklaces and stacks of bangles

Makeup: Lots of it, and usually very matchy-matchy. So if Tanu’s wearing a pink kurta, she’s applied pink blush and pink lipstick. And oh, there’s also a tiny bindi and tonnes of mascara and even fake eyelashes!

Style & Shopping Guide: Deepika Padukone’s Piku look

FOUND: Deepika Padukone’s kurta from Piku! (Read on to know more).

In Piku, Deepika Padukone has one of her most unglamourous on-screen avatars. Here’s a complete style breakdown of Piku and where you can shop Deepika Padukone’s look.

Deepika Padukone in Piku

Deepika Padukone as Piku

Deepika Padukone’s character Piku is a working woman and always in a rush due to her father’s morning drama. No high-end designer wear or heavy makeup for her. Instead there’s minimal styling and accessories. Piku’s look is relatable and girl-next-door and indo-chic but deliberately non-colourful.

Clothes seem to be thrown together, her hair is almost a mess, and there isn’t much time for makeup and accessories either. She carries one big bag in which she can dump everything.

WARNING: This wedding jewellery is seriously drool-worthy

Loved the wedding outfit ideas I posted a couple of days ago? The next step is to choose gorgeous jewellery to accompany the gorgeous ensembles you’ve picked for the wedding season.

While jewellery is not as fickle as fashion, there are some jewellery themes that are popular right now and of course you need to know what they are. I’ve handpicked the most representative jewellery pieces to guide your purchases and “what to wear” choices.

Ladies, get ready to bust the bank to get your hands on these.

Diamonds

Yep, this one’s a no-brainer. Wear diamonds with absolutely anything and you’re bound to look and feel elegant, beautiful and stunning. (Bracelet from Hema S Kothari, Feather palm bracelet by Social Butterfly by Laila Singh, Regal multi-diamond necklace from Velvetcase.com)

Jadau

Okay, so another no-brainer. India’s traditional jewellery can make any woman feel like a princess. And jadau is giving serious competition to diamonds as the go-to jewellery style. (Earrings from Dwarkadas Chandumal Jewellers, cuff by Falguni Mehta)

You’ve got the best of both worlds in a single jewellery piece. Your jewellery choice just became easier. (Set from Dwarkadas Chandumal Jewellers, set from Gehna Jewellers)

GEHNA JEWELLERS(7) - DIAMOND JEWELLERY

Red and green

The Indian festive favourites! Whether it comes to diamonds or jadau, jewellery with red and green precious and semi-precious stones (or other elements) will always be a handy accessory! (Bracelet by Hema S Kothari, necklace from Velvetcase.com, set from Jagat Jewels)

Versatile pieces

Flexibility is the need of the hour whether it’s your work timings or jewellery. Jewellers are now giving us options— such as detachable pieces and neutral designs (can be worn with western and ethnic outfits). So a single jewellery investment gives you a lot more returns! Pearl story

Pearls are another classic jewellery style, but they need a 21st century makeover (Gen Y doesn’t like to wear pearl strings), so now they’re being incorporated into other jewellery styles like diamonds and jadau. (Set from Dwarkadas Chandumal Jewellers, set from Jagat Jewels, earrings from Falguni Mehta)

Colours

To copy the most over-used fashion cliché—it’s a riot of colours. When your clothes are colourful, why why not your jewellery? Besides red and green, there are sparkly purples, oranges and peaches to add some hues to your jewellery box. 5 top tips to trendy Diwali dressing

While we don’t usually put much though into our festive dressing, ethnic Indian wear is moving rapidly when it comes to designs and styles, with new trends coming every season. Here are some tips to help you wear these trends and look super-stylish this Diwali.

Tip 1: Experiment with embellishments

Embellishment sprayed all over your anarkali or sari are passé. The trend is toward embellishments on specific garments or sections of garments. This means pairing a heavy embellished dupatta from a lehenga with a simple kurta-churidar set, or heavily-sequined blouses with light saris. Embroidered borders on light saris and anarkali kurtas look great too. If you’re wearing calf-length anarkalis, opt for styles that have embellishments limited to the bodice. Also, look beyond stones or sequins—gold thread work, latkans (danglers) and shimmery thread can be great embellishments for Indian wear.

(Below: Look from Peppermint Diva and Anushree Reddy AW 14)

Tip 2: Try prints for a change

We usually associate festive dressing only with embellishments, but why not explore the wonderful variety of traditional Indian prints? Block prints give a rich feel on luxurious fabrics, while leheriya saris with gota work are sureshot winners. Or try out any bandhini pieces lying in your closet, such as dupattas or saris. Of course, if you miss bling, look for pieces that have a dash of sequins or metallic embellishments.

(Below: Turi sari with gota border from Amazon, Block-printed suit set from Biba at Jabong.com)

Tip 3: Mix and match

I know, mix and match as a fashion trend may be done to death recently, but it’s cool to create new looks from existing outfits. Mixing colours is easy, especially when you don’t need to match them. So pair the kurta of one outfit with the dupatta and churidar of another one. Or the gold blouse of your traditional sari with a new printed sari. Or throw a long or short jacket over your kurta. And who says you need to wear only traditional jewellery with Indian wear? Try diamond (or diamante) earrings with your ethnic outfits- you will be surprised how the fusion look works!

Below: Look from Ritu Kumar AW 2014 and Long jacket from Wrap Studio.

Tip 4: Update your accessories

You use your go-to metallic clutch all year round. This Diwali, try the batua instead (also known as a potli). They’re spacious, embellished and look great with ethnic Indian outfits, like saris and kurtas. When it comes to jewellery, you don’t need to follow the earrings-necklace-bangles routine. Instead, try on hair accessories like a maang tikka or clip, and ditch the bangles for a cuff and a simple gold-finish watch.

Below: Batua from Toniq, Jadau kada from Falguni Mehta

Tip 5: Groom, groom, groom!

A gorgeous festive look is incomplete without the perfect makeup and hair, right? Go for fuss-free hair styles like a blow dry or iron for natural bounce and texture. As for makeup, make lip colours the focus—copper, champagne and burgundy are ideal for ethnic wear. And hey, red lip colours always work!

Bonus Tip: Always remember the basics of festive dressing (colours, fabrics, silhouettes)

Rich colours: Deep blues and greens, reds, pinks, corals, orange family. BTW, black is okay too.

Luxurious fabrics: Opt for silk and georgette over cotton and linen.

Flattering silhouettes: Anarkalis or salwar-kurtas to suit your body type, well-draped saris to create the illusion of height and curves, with thin borders for petite women.

Happy Diwali to all!

Just Jewellery: Indian accessories you need for the festive season

Diwali! The festival of lights heralds good fortune and the upcoming Great Indian Wedding Season. So when you shop this week, make it worthwhile and shop for those weddings as well.

I headed to the Just Jewellery store expecting for a one-stop shop to all jewellery needs for the season, and I wasn’t disappointed. This ethnic-inspired store has the answer to all your needs for Indian accessories to take you through the season and beyond. Located close to Mumbai’s famous Mahalakshmi temple, the store is a little haven for the ladies who love semi-precious Indian jewellery. It’s especially a hot favourite for brides-to-be and guests headed to destination weddings.

As I walked into the store, I spotted vibrant colours, quintessential Indian styles with contemporary design elements. The Just Jewellery store houses gorgeous pieces of jewellery such as necklaces, earrings, bracelets, kadas, and hair accessories.

Just Jewellery store Mumbai

While entrepreneur Jasmine Shah introduced me to the collection, I took in the statement necklaces, ornate earrings and super-cute rings. Keeping in line with current trends, there was plenty of play with colour and contrasting elements. For instance, bright orange with royal blue on a ring, or a Buddha motif with a wooden panel on earrings. Each piece has been made in Jaipur, using elements conceptualized or sourced by Jasmine and Sandhya Shah from across the globe (they are a daughter-in-law and mother-in-law duo). Jasmine was delighted to share that they don’t really visit Mumbai’s famous Zaveri Bazaar for their jewellery. I guess that’s what makes them stand apart in terms of design.

Jasmine also mentioned that they have private consultations for brides or anyone else who wants jewellery tailored to their specific needs.

While most of the jewellery is completely wearable and WOW, I’ve picked some pieces and styles from Just Jewellery that you could wear for Diwali and rest of the festive season.

An eye-catching necklace

The statement necklace could be multi-tiered, beaded or studded… all you need is the pizzazz to wear it. My favourites:

Traditional earrings

Kundan-style earrings are really popular right now and Just Jewellery has plenty of those. What I also also loved were traditional-looking earrings (with Indian-style beads or finishing) with a modern twist, such as a print or marble-textured pieces. Check out the ones I liked:

Hair accessories

Clips, maang tikkas and even hair bands add a dash of luxury to any ensemble. If you don’t believe me, try one of them and you will feel like a royal. These are the choices of hair accessories… cool, huh?

Hand ornaments

Bracelets, kadas and rings are easy to pair with any ethnic outfit, since they don’t need to be too matchy-matchy. I’d pick at least two of each for the festive season.

Some of the rings and bracelets from Just Jewellery could easily double up as accessories for Indo-western and boho-Indian looks. I’d easily wear this ring with a white shirt and skinny blue jeans!

Winter accessories: My shopping list from Accessorize

There’s lots to love in accessories this season, with the revival of earlier trends and a contemporary spin on new accessory styles and designs.

Here are my top 5 trends for the season handpicked from the Accessorize AW 2014 collection. Enjoy!

Mini day bags

Now that our work is almost entirely on our smart phones, we can celebrate with smaller handbags! Accessorize has got plenty such compact handbags in a range of winter colours. My favourite hues from the bag collection are bordeaux and forest green.

Backpacks

If you think backpacks are for college kids, you’ve been living on another planet this year. Cool fashion backpacks are back, and how! (Pun unintended). At Accessorize, I loved the printed backpacks! They’re cool, easy to carry and hold a lot of stuff.

Delicate jewellery for layering

No more chunky jewellery, please! If you’ve seen the “arm party” happening in Bollywood movies lately (check out Deepika Padukone in Cocktail and Sonam Kapoor in Khoobsurat), you know you need to stack up on bracelets. Or try out multiple chains and rings- all delicate pieces, of course!

Scarves and hats

As the cold season comes in next month, we’ll need to stock up on winter clothes and accessories. To start with, check out these scarves and hats from Accessorize to keep you warm. I particularly like the muted scarf prints- very stylish!

Accessories you need for the upcoming party season: Embellished clutch + blingy jewellery. And Accessorize has plenty of options for each, so you can take your pick. These are best worn with a shimmery little dress to turn you into a party knockout.

Bollywood jewellery, Minawala style

Over the decades, most creative fields in India (from dance to fashion) have been strongly influenced by Bollywood and the people who make it glamourous. This season, it’s Minawala’s design team that’s caught the Bollywood bug and has created a collection that follows Bollywood trends and style.

I got a good look at the Bollywood by Design collection when I visited the Minawala store last week. The range is about drama, glamour, beauty, grace and charisma. In jewellery trends, this has been translated into colour, exclusivity, highly stylized contemporary designs, and of course, a touch of OTT.

Take a look at these colourful earrings from the Minawala collection:

Minawala earrings  Minawala (140) Minawala (141)

Minawala Jewellers diamond necklace

Rightly so, there were also plenty of diamonds in the collection, used artistically with precious and semi-precious stones to create several multi-coloured pieces of jewellery. The stand-out pieces were statement earrings, oversized cocktail rings and multi-tiered necklaces.

My favourite piece? This kada featuring beautiful diamonds in several cuts.

Some fashion tips I picked up from the Bollywood By Design jewellery:

  • Fashion is fickle- it changes every season. But jewellery trends are everlasting. Invest in a few good pieces and you could wear them forever, unlike clothes which you need to discard every season or at least once a year.
  • Go OTT with jewellery when you want to look glamourous like the stars. Team your diamond jewellery with a stylish dress or gown for an evening out. It’s okay to “over dress”, but make sure you don’t resemble Diwali fireworks.
  • Use colour (plenty of it!) in clothes, accessories and jewellery. While fashion dictates specific colours every season, jewellery trends don’t usually follow such rigid stories, which makes choosing your jewellery easier.
  • Wear a statement piece of jewellery for an elegant look. It could be dangling earrings, an eye-catching cuff or ring. Diamond jewellery can be worn on all occasions, but is best suited for classy, tasteful style.
  • While we usually choose our clothes first, and then our jewellery, why not try dressing the other way round once in a while? Pick the piece of jewellery you wish to highlight, then put together the rest of your ensemble. 🙂

Minawala’s Bollywood By Design collection is available at Minawala stores in Mumbai, New Delhi and Bengaluru.

I am a Mia Woman—are you as beautiful as your work?

I am a Mia Woman—are you as beautiful as your work?

This blog post is a contest entry for the Mia by Tanishq Blogger Contest. You can check out the Mia TV ad on YouTube, and the gorgeous Mia by Tanishq jewellery collection here.

I am a multi-tasker by choice. I’m part of a marketing team by day, and full-time fashion blogger at night. For both jobs, I am constantly looking out for new ideas, exploring new avenues, dreaming of new content….

Both jobs require me to communicate important messages to the right people while making sure my work looks appealing. There are several things that need to look great when I work on something for office or the blog — numbers in black Arial from monthly reports, boring press releases, and seemingly-disconnected fashion pictures.

No one really wants to read rows of numbers on a sheet or images that mean nothing. There has to be a connection somewhere- maybe even some sort of story, right? And that’s why I try to brainstorm– to make sense of what I need to write as a report or blog post. I may need to sell an idea to the team at work, or hot trends to my blog readers.

So how does that happen? I read everything I have- again and again till I can figure out a “story”, with a specific purpose. This could be anything- from convincing my boss on a new SOP we should make, or making readers think they’d look great in this colour or that print.

Van Heusen Limited Edition

Once the purpose is clear, everything falls into place! The boring numbers get transformed into simple categories, arranged in neat columns demarcated by colours and type of information. The press releases are completely re-written, and the drab documents get a new look with a theme and an eye-catching layout.

Embellishments, colours and fabrics suddenly appear in a different light– making for a hot trend! A collection of pictures becomes a slide show or gallery. For quarterly and monthly reviews, the right pictures are selected and re-arranged, while mostly meaningless data shows insight into the business. With each slide, blog post, chart, or even a spreadsheet formula that I work on, I aim to make a lasting impact, and make it fun, reader-friendly and as creative as possible. The standard “templates” for work or blogging are certainly not for me.

Yes, transforming the terribly mundane to the creatively exciting is part of my daily life, and I’m loving it. And that’s why I’m as beautiful as my work. Smile Are you?
