WIFW SS 13 Day 2 Recap

WIFW SS 13 Day 2 Recap

Manish Malhotra
Manish Malhotra’s been using a lot of Kashmiri embroidery and chikankari recently, and for this ramp collection, he continued with the latter, associating with the NGO Mijwan. And there were the usual suspects of colours like ivory, creme, burnt orange, dull shades of red, pink and the like. Some great stuff to look at, but not new.

WIFW SS13 Manish Malhotra

AM:PM
Ankur and Priyanka Modi stuck to a simple colour palette, but with exotic imagery of god-birds, the Mayan maze, and birds of paradise. Exoticism was balanced with elegant fluid silhouettes, though the designer duo could have taken a few more risks.

Anaikka
The designer tried to capture the multiple facets of a woman through garments crafted for specific personalities, character traits and looks. This ranged from the simple feminine charm to the complex mysterious allure. Two key themes in the collection: attention to detail and strong use of monotones.

WIFW SS13 Anaikka

Dev R Nil
Clever print mixing in dresses and separates comprised this very wearable collection. The colour palette was restricted to mostly nude, taupe, pale lime, and navy blue with sparks of tangerine and fuchsia.

WIFW SS13 Dev R Nil

James Ferreira
Moving away from last year’s tie-and-dye, the designer’s new collection features hand painting by textile artist Bhamini Subramaniam and minimal embellishment. Chic and modern, the draped silhouettes were all seen before.

WIFW SS13 James Ferreira

Kavita Bhartia
The “Romanian” influences is not quite apparent, and the headgear was quite disconcerting. The odd-coloured wigs distracted us from the garments, which were quite likable once you saw beyond the wool-hair.

WIFW SS13 Kavita Bhartia

Rajesh Pratap Singh
Rajesh Pratap Singh experimented with new materials (fabrics and otherwise), used tassellation and various drapes for a slightly futuristic look (big shoulders, surface textures).

SCHON by Sakshee Pradhan
Marking the journey of the sparrow, the rich fabrics and an outfit with some embroidery were the only interesting bits about the collection.

WIFW SS13 SAKSHEE PRADHAN

Samant Chauhan
Samant Chauhan attempted to create masterpieces worth royalty with Bhagalpuri silks, “assi kalis” and zardozi embroidery. Are all the garments worth royalty? Are they all masterpieces? The answer to both questions is “No”, though some of them are certainly arisotocratic, if not regal.

WIFW SS13 Samanth Chauhan

Surbhi Chawla
Lots of “influences” in the collection (nomadic, tribal, gypsy), but the common thread to bind them all together was missing.

Parineeti Chopra for Manish Malhotra. Maybe she could have tried to carry the outfit a bit more gracefully?

Diana Penty for Sakshee Pradhan- drab, just like her look in Cocktail.

Best looks from Day 1 at Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2012:

Archana Rao

“Frou-Frou” was wearable, practical and minimalistic. Loved the menswear inspiration (structured shirt) combined with the feminine touch (polka dots, sheer fabrics). I got inspired by the mix-and-match styling as well.

Megha Garg

Fluid floating drapes, multiple layers, ombre effects and digital prints on jersey and silk organza. When you wear this, keep your makeup all dark, and you would look goth!

Drashta

Cocktail wear taken seriously. Inventive stuff– inverted seams for unconventional detailing, cropped lace jackets, slashed sleeves for tunics, and a grey coat dress in ribbed silver weave. Drashta at LFW S/R 2012

James Ferreira

Tie-and-dye and bandhini on a single fabric, for very wearable skirts, tops, swirling maxis and blouses. A drape here, a fold there, a tuck in there- good construction!

Ahh, the prints. Warning: for the quirky fashionistas only!

Crazy but interesting looks

Prashant Chauhan

An interpretation of Tibetan attire with use of silk, wool, patchwork and floral patterns. Most interesting bits: baubles of wool, exotic head gear and 3D flowers. (Umm… not sure if the model could see through that).

SoFake by Sapna Bhavnani and Sukriti Grover

Take a look at the pic below. Not an easy collection to conceive, design and execute. Hmmmm!!!SoFake Sapna Bhavnani and Sukriti Grover at LFW S/R 2012

Tanya Sharma

Don’t get taken aback by the “Gaga” look. You could wear the garments as separates for a saner look. 🙂

Special moment of the day

There were more than a couple of celebs walking the ramp. My fave: hottie Prateik for Masaba Gupta. But why is he wearing baby pink shoes?

LFW S/R 2012 Day 1: Shows to watch today

LFW S/R 2012 Day 1: Shows to watch today

Fashion lovers, Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2012 kicks off today! Here are the shows I’m excited about:

Gen Next show: Every season, LFW kicks off with the Gen Next show. It’s always interesting to watch India’s young fashion talent present their first collections. Looking forward to it! The Gen Next designers are Archana Rao, Shikha Grover & Vinita Adhikare, Manoj Kumar & Vinod Bhardwaj, Tanya Sharma, Megha Garg, Yogesh Chaudhary and Prashant Kumar.

SoFake by Sapna Bhavnani and Sukriti Grover: Sapna and Sukriti’s first collection for SoFake emphasizes on classic cuts, strong structured shapes and the use of basic colours “black, grey and white” that can be paired with anything. Their inspiration? Kathakali and the British Raj!

Shivan – Narresh: Shivan and Narresh are best known for their resort wear. Since I’m already in the process of getting into shape this summer, I’m looking forward to their swim suits. 😉

James Ferreira: He is known as a “master draper and cutter” and returns to the Mumbai fashion scene after a gap of five years. James will present “Save the Air” that is dedicated to Mumbai, and hopes to bring around awareness for the quality of air we breathe.

Which show are you looking forward to today?

Here’s a look at what happened on Day 1 of Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Autumn/ Winter 2012.

All kinds of cocktail dresses

There were gorgeous metallic finish dresses at S&N Drape by Shantanu-Nikhil, while slinky satins with drapes and lower doses of bling made up James Ferreira’s collection.

Prints of the day

I enjoyed the rippled reed, lotus and lotus leaf print on moss and leaf greens at Anand Kabra, while Anupama Dayal did not surprise with her choice of florals and geometrics (among her faves going by earlier collections).

The best prints of the day were the tie-and-dye (Indian and geometric) dresses at James Ferreira.

White, black and shades of nude

It’s amazing how white, black and nude appear different to each designer. For Vineet Bahl, a black canvas was the starting point, later moving on to earthier hues. (Below: Vineet Bahl)

At S&N Drape by Shantanu-Nikhil, the final set of garments were nude dresses with white embroidery, and they were gorgeous. And Anju Modi began with ivory and cream, and ended with black.

International influences

Sixteenth century Spanish toreros (matadors) provided inspiration to Preeti Chandra. The toreros wore elaborately decorated ‘Traje de Luces’ or ‘suits of light’. She transformed the toreros’ Trajes de Luces (suits of light) into feminine forms with dabka and intricate embroideries on silks. (Below: Preeti Chandra)

Meanwhile, Vineet Bahl used vintage Romanian shawls and antique Sardinian embroideries on 1960s silhouettes for the world traveller. The Indian touch came with neon accents with kantha work and stone work on brocade. (Below: Vineet Bahl)

Anju Modi explored the diversity of cultures and their similarity with inspiration from Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan touching the Kutch border. The free flowing silhouettes were the hallmark of the collection, with ‘sarabara’ or loose trousers worn by Scythians transformed into cowl trousers. Hand-woven fabrics (raw silk melding with textured cotton) brought an earthy edge to the collection. (Below: Anju Modi)

Accessories of the day

Footwear grabbed the spotlight with sexy stilettos for the glam party girl at S&N by Shantanu-Nikhil and summery, girly shoes at Anupama Dayal. Meanwhile, the dangling earrings at Preeti Chandra reminded me of the 1980s and Spanish country women.
