Bollywood Fashion: Student of the Year is all about the brands

Karan Johar’s movies are not known for portraying stark reality, but Student of the Year is based in a hyper-real world. The “school” in the movie (St. Teresa) is perhaps the size of Hogwarts, houses students who are impossibly multi-faceted, good-looking and rich, and even the “Bata” gang dresses in premium brands.

Brands, brands, brands!

Alia Bhatt is Shanaya, the vain bimbo, who marvels at her beauty and pampers herself with brands. You name the brand, and it’s there. Her introductory song (Gulabi Aankhein) has a chorus which mentions and features luxury brands like Manolo, Jimmy Choo, Prada, Stella McCartney. Really! Take a look:

And then begins a game of spot-the-brand. Rishi Kapoor, for instance, pops open a Burberry umbrella in the sun, and reads notes from a Louis Vuitton case/ folder. Alia Bhatt totes a Dior bag and an Hermes Birkin. Even the sportswear is sponsored- the football uniforms by Puma and the triathlon clothes by Fusion (a UK brand specialising in triathlon clothing). As for the men in the movie—they are walking-talking Ray-Ban advertisements. 😀

Key Looks

Shanaya is a feminine girl who wears mostly dresses and skirts, sometimes hot shot pants. On a normal day, she carries a Birkin, and brings a Dior bag to her school canteen. The lucky girl also wears Manish Malhotra outfits to a wedding. Her wardrobe is so out of touch with reality that she doesn’t have “hospital” clothes.

Alia’s makeup (done by Mickey Contractor) is only about red lips, and her hair is straightened and slicked back with a cutesy hairband. This lucky young lady has got to wear the best designers and brands, but it’s unfortunate to see her in a uniform look throughout the movie (pun intended).

Rohan (Varun Dhawan) and Abhimanyu (Siddharth Malhotra) are The Dudes At School, so they look good in every frame. Varun plays an aspiring musician, hence quirky prints like Mickey Mouse tshirts and the like are his statement. Siddharth Malhotra is dressed a bit more “serious”. Even so, his character is “poor” enough to be on scholarship, but can afford Quiksilver tshirts, Aviators and designer kurtas. The guys’ buff bods work well for them and are an essential part of their look, since they need to look sexy in their body-hugging sports gear.

Meanwhile, Rishi Kapoor’s gay character wears polka dotted and pink ties with mismatched shirts and blazers with quirky brooches on the lapel (like a koala bear and crystal-encrusted reptile!).

The Coolest School

The uniform of this cool “school” is pretty awesome- you can wear anything you want, as long as you wear the school blazer over it. Manish Malhotra has styled the lead actors while Shiraz Siddique and Archana Walavalkar have worked with the supporting cast.

Being a Karan Johar movie, all characters look good, wear cool clothes and are quite trendy. If I went to such a learning institution, I’d either die of brand envy or spend an hour a day choosing my wardrobe and fixing my hair and makeup. Not to mention I’d end up draining my family’s precious money on clothes. And of course, there wouldn’t be time to study. 😉

While Karan Johar has attempted to make the movie as slick as possible, but the high dose of fashion seems looks almost implausible in real life. So yeah, if you like good-looking movies, Student of the Year is for you. If you like good movies though, then you can bunk this class.

Bollywood Fashion: Anaita Shroff Adajania stirs a heady fashion mix in Cocktail

In my previous post, I introduced Cocktail fashion with help from the movie’s costume stylist Anaita Shroff Adajania. During my chat with her, I got deeper insight into the movie’s costumes- developing the looks, brands to spot, and key trends. Here are the highlights from our style chat.

Anaita Shroff Adajania - Cocktail fashion

How did you relate the characters in Cocktail to their costumes and looks in the film?

Each character in Cocktail is different from the other, so it was easy to relate Veronica, Meera and Gautam’s personalities with their looks. Veronica (Deepika Padukone) is very fashion forward, mixing high street fashion with designer wear. Meera, being a middle-class girl from Delhi, is more conservative in her dressing- so she will keep her arms and legs covered as much as possible. Gautam is a well-off young guy with a casual approach to life and fashion.

(To read more about their looks, read An introduction to Cocktail style).

The film has a very international look- featuring trends like nautical stripes, shorts and prints. How did you achieve that?

I work with a great young team- especially Ayesha Dasgupta, who has also dressed the supporting cast. Besides that, I spent time looking at how people dressed across the word, observing people and street style and recording memories and nightmares! I sourced for the movie in London and had brainstorming sessions with the director and producer. We discussed who the characters were, where they came from, what they did… even if it wasn’t part of the movie. My intention was to get the costumes right for the film.

What are the key fashion trends in Cocktail that fashion lovers and fans could try?

The top trend is montone- wearing the same colour from head to toe. For instance, Deepika wears a green t-shirt and shorts with matching accessories in the movie.

Also, there are new ways of layering to try out- like belts over cardigans and shirts. And then there’s the return to the classics, such trench coats, and pairing tees with shorts.

Then there is mixing of high street and luxury, deconstructed (oversized) t-shirts rather than figure hugging, and stacked accessories for women.

What are some of the fashion brands you have used to dress Deepika, Diana and Saif in Cocktail?

I’ve done a lot of high street shopping for the movie, along with some luxury brands. You will see Topshop, French Connection, All Saints, River Island, Pull & Bear and Zara, among others. As for the high fashion brands, there’s a patent pink bag from Chanel, sunglasses from Dior (for Deepika and Saif), Burberry trench coat and bag (for Saif), and an Hermes scarf. Diana’s character carries a Tod’s bag, and Amrapali Jewels are very important to her character.

Which are your favourite looks from the movie?

My favourite is Deepika’s poster look- sequined skirt (All Saints), with t-shirt, Dior sunglasses and flat sandals with feather. Among Saif’s looks, I love the t-shirt-blazer-jeans combo and unusual colour combinations like mauve and grey. As for Diana, her pink salwar kameez is gorgeous- love it!

What should a fashion lover look out for while watching the movie?

The list is endless, but here goes anyway… The Burberry leather jacket, Pucci scarf that Deepika ties in her hair, Monet jewellery, and the Anya Hindmarch bag. The brands are a subtle mix just like the title of the movie.

Reader question- How can I stay on top of fashion trends, yet look different from the rest?

You must dress for yourself, and don’t copy movie star looks. You can individualise trends you like, such as layering. Choose a belt to layer over a cardigan, but it can be any cardigan, not necessarily the one you spotted in a movie or on a celeb.

Reader question- You are fashion director at Vogue India, celeb and movie stylist and a mom of two kids. How do you manage to multi task so well?

I don’t know the answer to that! I think good time management helps, stick to deadlines and have people respect your time as well. I think what makes it easy for me is that I love everything I do.

Chic Luxury: Hermès comes to Mumbai, we’re lining up for their scarves

In the heart of south Mumbai, amidst the bustling business district around Fort, not too many passersby take note of the art deco architecture or appreciate the historic significance of the city’s erstwhile administrative centre. So when Hermès, the leading French luxury brand, opened its doors there last week, it took a moment for the store’s location to sink in—it’s adjacent to the Asiatic Society Library.

(Below: The Hermès store and view of the library from the first floor).

Even before you enter the two-storey Hermès store, you know you’re stepping into luxury. From the unique choice of location to the artistic window displays, the brand’s third store in India is symbolic of what Hermès stands for and what it brings to the city of Mumbai.

The right way to pronounce Hermès is air-mez, not her-mez or her-meez or hair-mez or hair-maze.

Being the largest store in the country at 280-odd square metres, my visit to the Hermès store was unlike any other shopping trip… it was an experience. The store’s elegant interiors are charming but not overwhelming, and at par with their international stores (I visited an Hermès store in Barcelona recently). The Hermès team has made special efforts to create a warm ambience that’s not intimidating to first-time visitors or window shoppers.

The first thing you notice when you enter are their gorgeous scarves (nay, works of art) that Hermès is known for. I couldn’t help but gape at the prints—the colours, the designs, the texture… you have to wrap one around your neck to feel the luxurious silk pamper you. The store assistant showed me how to make the most of a scarf, as a top, dress, and even a bag (picture below)!

Hermès scarf as a bag

On the ground level there were also accessories like cuffs and bangles, watches, belts, and of course, bags! Psst.. there’s a long waitlist for the famous Birkin! I fell for one of the cuffs BTW, and I may soon start saving up for it.

Another section on the same floor housed clothes for men and women, with Jean-Paul Gaultier’s last collection for Hermès. Just for fun, I tried on a leather corset. It made me feel sexy and bold and didn’t constrict my breathing unlike corsets of yore. 😉 I also reckon that the sheers of the collection will become all-time classics.

On the upper level, the homeware section has an exquisite collection of crockery and glassware to make your dinner table  prettier than your pink dress. Of course, I wouldn’t want to spoil an Hermès dinner plate with something as banal as food.

For those wanting to chill, there’s a small art gallery with photographs of royal palaces in India and France. And you can sit down at their little tables for a steaming cuppa joe. It’s quiet, peaceful and you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re in a special store in Paris or Milan. Ahh, the life of luxury!

Prices are the last thing on the mind of an Hermès shopper, and there’s some unwritten law that demands we write “prices on request” for luxury brands. But we’ve got some prices down anyways:

Scarves: Rs 25,000 approx for 100% silk scarves
Cuffs/ bangles: Rs 25,000 approx for a thin bangle, Rs 45,000 for a cuff.
Bags: The Lindy was around Rs 3,39,000.

Needless to say, most of us would need a pretty good wealth advisor to help us buy this. But till we win the lottery, enjoy the beauty of Hermès!
