Anushka Sharma’s style pick for a road trip

So, the NH 10 trailer starring Anushka Sharma and Neil Bhoopalam just hit YouTube and the film’s premise seems thrilling. Anushka Sharma is on an unexpectedly dangerous road trip, and luckily she’s dressed perfectly for it, with a HOODIE.

Anushka’s bright yellow hoodie gets dirtier as dangers loom and she faces growing threats. The hoodie is perfect for a road trip because it keeps you comfortable and warm, and can be taken off when it’s hot. And a hoodie is totally fashion-appropriate as well: it’s sporty, outdoorsy and super stylish! Check out these chic options:

Bollywood Fashion: Wear Matru ki Bijlee ka Mandola’s looks the easy way

Bollywood Fashion: Wear Matru ki Bijlee ka Mandola’s looks the easy way

As expected from a movie based in rural India,  there’s not much fashion in Vishal Bharadwaj’s latest venture Matru ki Bijlee ka Mandola. With costumes by Payal Saluja, the clothes are rustic and raw as they should be, with each key character having a distinct style statement. Here they are (and how you can wear them):

Matru (Imran Khan)
Matru is not what he seems to be. Though he serves the zamindar, his revolutionary spirit is camouflaged well. Hence his look is decidedly blend-in-the-crowd and inconspicuous.

Imran Khan in Matru ki Bijlee ka Mandola

What he’s wearing: He dons a cotton kurta with sleeves folded or rolled up, teamed with worn-out waistcoat or leather jacket,  jeans and long scarf (the rural gamcha) wound around his neck.

How to wear: Both guys and girls can ape this ambiguous look, except perhaps for the gold balis and kada on his wrist. Instead of kurtas, try a long-sleeved tee for a more “cityish” look.

Recommendation: Kurta from Fab India

Bijlee (Anushka Sharma)
She’s cute but bold, and has got tattoos at the oddest of places to prove she’s rebellious.

(Picture courtesy: Official movie page on Facebook)

What she’s wearing: Anushka is in chunky  knits/ shawls and oversized crochet tops over camisoles, with a skirt or hot pants and lace stockings. Her hair is usually a mess, but the eyeliner is never out of place. On her wedding day, she changes from shorts to a calf-length ghagri in what seems to be a jiffy.

How to wear: Baggy tops are hot right now so wear them much as you like, but skip the shorts and wear jeans with boots instead. It’s grungy enough without being inappropriate.

Accessories tip: Anushka’s accessories are quirky earrings (like the long feathers-on-chains in Oye Boy Charlie) and several leather bands around her wrist. All of these are easily available at local and high street brands.

Recommendations: Cable knit cardigan from Zara, Color Carnival earrings (available on ShopInOnIt).

Mandola (Pankaj Kapur)
The most complex character in the movie, Mandola is the rich zamindar who lives a luxurious life. On an ordinary day, he chooses between a Rolls Royce, Bentley and limousine and has a guy to hold his sunglasses for him.

Pankaj Kapur in Matru ki Bijlee ka Mandola

What he’s wearing: He dresses elegantly in tailored suits, complete with matching pocket squares and scarves. And oh, very British hats! Unfortunately his Haryanvi paunch requires him to wear unattractive suspenders. Pankaj Kapur may not be a handsome actor,  but his character’s irony is not lost given the context of rural India.

How to wear: Most men may choose to wear coloured suits now, but the best bets are still black, grey and navy. Ties are optional.

Recommendation: Suit from Anita Dongre

Monotone outfits

Worn by: Katrina Kaif

As a British upper class business woman who moves around in a chauffer-driven Rolls Royce, Katrina Kaif’s character Meera’s style is a modern take on elegance. She sticks to simple silhouettes and colours, with almost zero feminine frills.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan- Katrina Kaif

How to wear:

Opt for comfortable A-line and shift silhouettes in knee-length dresses and coats. Choose bold colours like red, blue and green. Make sure there is only one eye-catching colour in your ensemble.

Jackets- puffed and leather

Worn by: Katrina Kaif, Anushka Sharma, Shahrukh Khan

Katrina covers up a Manish Malhotra lehenga on a snowy day with a bright red quilted anorak, while both women wear vintage-style leather jackets on different occasions. Meanwhile, Shahrukh Khan’s jackets are limited to light woollens and vests in muted colours like grey and dark blue.

How to wear:

You can wear your winter jackets over anything and everything…. go crazy!

Boots for women

Worn by: Katrina Kaif, Anushka Sharma

While Katrina pairs knee-length boots with short skirts in winter (really!), Anushka Sharma wears outdoorsy laced boots meant for camping.

How to wear:

Very few women can carry off knee-length boots, so I suggest ankle and calf-length boots with jeans instead. The laced heavy boots are for the adventurous types or those living in the mountains.

Where to buy: Vanilla Moon, Steve Madden

Military camouflage pants

Worn by: Shahrukh Khan

He’s an army man, it’s standard issue.

How to wear: Military detailing and camouflage prints were a hot trend couple years ago, but they are always around if look carefully. Pair military print pants with plain tees in earth tones like olive green, mud brown and black.

How to wear:

Look out for checks in dark colours like blue, grey and dark green, and shirts in heavier fabrics like twill. Details like elbow patches and contrast pockets will add a fun twist to classic checks. Pair with jeans, chinos and trousers.

Snoods & scarves

Worn by: Shahrukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, Anushka Sharma

Mufflers, scarves, snoods, in solids and prints, cotton and wool- they were all there in the movie. The lead actors all wore their scarves differently from the others.

How to wear:

Choose the type of scarf depending on the weather in your city (wool or cotton) and how you plan to wear it (as a fun accessory or to keep warm). There are great stripes, shiny, metallic finishes, prints and colours for every fashion personality!

Where to buy: Esprit and French Connection for women’s and scarves, men’s scarves at Celio (bottom)

Chic Beauty Trends: Funky nails, Bollywood’s minimal makeup look

On my recent trip to Spain, I noticed that a lot of senoritas experimented with clothes and makeup. Among other (mostly fashion) trends in Spain, I spotted brightly-coloured nails. But the nail trend I I immediately wanted to try was this one:

funky coloured nails

I’d like to call this the ring-finger manicure. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Select two nail colours from the same “colour” family (eg pinks, purples, bronzes etc). The colours should be contrasting or be several “shades” apart.
  2. Apply the lighter colour on all fingers except the ring fingers.
  3. Apply the darker shade on the ring fingers.
  4. Flaunt your nails!

Bollywood’s no makeup look: seen on Jacqueline Fernandes, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma

I saw two movies recently—Murder 2 and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. In both movies, the leading ladies (Jacqueline Fernandes and Katrina Kaif) looked fabulous and radiant, despite almost-zero makeup.

Jacqueline Fernandes in Murder2

Both Jacqueline and Katrina have clearly followed a great beauty routine and diet (and hired an awesome cosmetologist) to get great skin, which always helps. 🙂 For the movie, they applied a natural-finish foundation and not much else. Jacqueline also added a hint of smokey eyeshadow and a good deal of mascara while Katrina’s lips were probably pampered with a good lip balm. The casual looks were perfectly complemented with tousled, unkempt hair.

Meanwhile we also spotted Anushka Sharma at a Nivea event with a similar look, finished with a touch of gloss.

Bollywood Fashion: Boring Anushka Sharma, some fun looks in Patiala House

After Anushka Sharma’s Band Baaja Baaraat Punjabi kudi role, the actor stars in a “Punjabi” style movie yet again. In Patiala House (starring Akshay Kumar, Rishi Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia and a Punjabi-sized ensemble cast), we’ve not paid much attention to Anushka Sharma. That’s partly because we’re bored of the typical Punjabi clothes and boy/girl-next-door outfits of the cast.

Instead, our style focus shifts to the Kahlon family “bimbettes”: Jesmeet and Anaida.

Jesmeet (Selina Hotwani) and Anaida (Juveria Khan) are young giggly sisters who apparently like “boys, makeup and more boys.” While that’s sadly stereotypical of most popcorn flicks, we’re enjoying Jesmeet and Anaida’s on-screen style. Take a look:

Patiala House picture

The two have done played with trends like colour mixing and funky layering, and are sporting trendy accessories like chic berets and long necklaces. Of course, credit is also due to Patiala House’s costume designer Jaimal O’Dedra.

Meanwhile, Anushka Sharma doesn’t seem to be making much of an impact in the Patiala House promos—neither in the fashion department nor otherwise. Here’s a glimpse of Anushka in the popular song Laung da Lashkara.

Anushka Sharma in Patiala House

Anushka is wearing a tight choli and low-waist lehenga. Nothing new in that, but I liked the nose-ring. Is it coming back already?

If you’ve seen the Band Baaja Baaraat promos, you’ve seen Anushka Sharma as the Dilli kudi. As an ordinary Delhi girl, Anushka Sharma’s look is neither glam nor fab, but very girl-next-door.

Wearing mostly cotton kurtis, kurtas, tees and shirts with straight and skinny jeans, Anushka Sharma is comfortable playing a goal-oriented, organised and smart young woman. But costume designer Niharika Khan has given Anushka’s Band Baaja Baarat plain-Jane wardrobe a stylish twist with a plethora of scarves and dupattas. These complement Anushka Sharma’s clothes and define her character’s (Shruti) style statement.

Anushka Sharma Band Baaja Baaraat Anushka Sharma in Band Baaja Baaraat

What we’ve spotted already are plain crushed dupattas with kurtis, and printed stoles with tshirts and shirts. In one scene, Anushka has casually draped a shawl over a green kurti and jeans.

Niharika Khan has carefully contrasted colours and clashed colours, and selected prints that are easy to carry off and what a typical Delhi girl would opt for. She’s ensured that Shruti’s clothes are relatable, and, more importantly, accessible to every young woman across the country.

Of course, there’s no ground-breaking fashion to be seen in Band Baaja Baaraat (at least in the promos), especially since Shruti wouldn’t be the type to experiment with fashion. But hey, we wouldn’t be surprised to see girls flaunting their scarves over the next few weeks. I’d be one of them. 🙂

PS: Also check out Anushka Sharma’s patiala salwar in a song from Band Baaja Baaraat. These have been around on-screen and off-screen for a while now, and seem to rise and decline in popularity every couple months.
