Chic 2012: Best fashion ads of the year

Fashion ecommerce sites ruled the fashion ad space in 2012. And they caught attention with the decades-old funda- Sex sells!

Myntra-Lisa Haydon-a

Myntra’s Hottest December Sale promo had gorgeous Lisa Haydon doing a striptease on primetime television. I’m sure I’m not the only one who initially mistook it for a Fastrack commercial.

The BeStylish promo was about sexy shoes and seduction. Enough to excite shoe lovers and then some!

And Tanishq brought in a refreshing change to boiler-plate jewellery advertising with their Mia commercials. Go-getter office girls dealing with real problems like parking space and not-so-good appraisals.

Special Mention: Fashion videos

Anita Dongre’s Jaipur Bride was beautifully shot and made every woman want to be an Indian bride.

Fastrack’s Like Bunnies We Multiply was funny, irreverent and unconventional. Just like the brand!

Which fashion commercial / video did you enjoy this year?

This is the first in a series of posts rounding up the Indian fashion scene in 2012.

Chic List: Things that shine! (Part 1)

All that glitters this season is ….. worth wearing! I don’t just mean the sequinned party dresses, but the shiny fabrics and textures! They glitter and sparkle in just the right amount to bring some holiday cheer to winter wardrobes.

The metallic finish pieces I’ve seen recently in stores look HOT (I’ve written about it earlier)! If I had an occasion or more to wear them, I’d have at least a few such in my closet by now! I’m almost feeling bad I don’t. 🙁

Here’s the first part of my list of things that shine! What’s your favourite?

Street Eeks: What NOT to wear at a cricket match ever

Street Eeks: What NOT to wear at a cricket match ever

Folks, there are things you can wear to a cricket match, and there are things you just don’t. This girl I spotted at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium over the weekend got it all wrong! Firstly, she was dressed in all black on a warm day, with a funny floral, black-silver skirt. (I can’t even describe it!).

Fashion in Mumbai

Then there was a sling bag across her body of a very odd mud colour and long dangling earrings (not in picture). But I can’t decide what’s worse- her shoes with the funny heels (aspiring me to be booties), or the black socks with them! Or the skirt. Or the odd black top…Yikes!

Meanwhile, I aimed for chic comfort at the India-England match- wearing a purple polo tee with lemony pants and my loafers of the moment.

Magazine Update: Dior, Diesel steal covers in November

Magazine Update: Dior, Diesel steal covers in November

Dior gets three

Dior has made it to three fashion magazine covers this month- a good hit rate (and well-thought strategy). So you see Dior cover Vogue ( on Shweta Nanda), GQ (Ajay Devgn), and Marie Claire (Soha Ali Khan).

Soha Ali Khan in Marie Claire Nov 2012

I could imagine Shweta Nanda in Dior. Maybe even Soha Ali Khan (she’s got royal blood). But never Ajay Devgn- he’s too rugged, too massy and too unfashionable for high fashion, right?

Ajay Devgn in GQ Nov 2012

But Vijendra Bhardwaj, who’s styled Devgn on the cover and photo feature, has got the actor looking surprisingly at ease comfy in designer wear. Or maybe it was Devgn’s best-kept fashion secret or he’s a brilliant actor. Nevertheless, Vijendra’s done an excellent job in this shoot.

Vogue goes social?

Meanwhile, I am surprised with Vogue’s choice of cover girl- they had earlier made a shift from top models to Bollywood stars. Are they moving to the high-class social circuit now? It’s highly possible, given that Bollywood is quite devoid of classy and fashionable folks and that the Bollywood-loving audience may not be the ideal (or real) Vogue reader. Wait and watch!

Roberto Cavalli for Sonam Kapoor– again!

A couple years ago, Sonam Kapoor shot a spread for Vogue with Roberto Cavalli at his mansion in Italy, wearing only the designer’s creations. In November’s issue of Grazia, Sonam’s done a repeat (though not at the Cavalli mansion). Sonam dons Cavalli on the cover and in the photo feature. Too bad there’s no mention of any exclusive contract or deal.

Diesel cares about Women’s Health

Women’s Health is not exactly a fashion magazine, but it’s certainly aspiring to be seen as a upscale one, with focus on intelligent content and an appealing layout. Diesel seems to be taking it seriously- since it’s everywhere in the magazine this month. Kalki Koechlin wears Diesel on the cover and the photo feature inside, the inside cover two-page ad is Diesel, and there’s a special photo feature dedicated to a jacket’s multi-tasking ability. That jacket is, of course, a Diesel.

Chic Guide: Fashion to invest in this season (for women)

Chic Guide: Fashion to invest in this season (for women)

October’s just begun and Autumn/Winter 2012 collections are in stores. But with so much choice and a limited budget, what should you buy this season? I’ve put together a guide to help you decide what clothes will take you through the season (hence a good fashion investment).

The idea is to select pieces that you can wear from October till January based on function, fashion and wearability.

The Winter Dress

Cold weather calls for knit or wool fitted dresses that can be paired with opaque tights or even slim-fit trousers. Depending on the weather in your city, choose a dress in a neutral or favourite colour in solids or simple prints, but with a great fit or interesting detailing.

Below: Cable Knit Dress from Mango

Mango Cable Knit Dress

The Evening Dress

It’s still too early in the season for bling, and heavy sequins are not something you really wear too often, unless you’re a party animal. So smartly choose an elegant luxurious and feminine dress that says it in style. Lace is the best bet- and it will take you from evening to night!

Below: Lori Lace Jersey Dress from French Connection

French COnnection Lace dress

The Knit Top

A knit top is the building block of winter layering. Before it freezes over, you can wear it under a light jacket or blazer, or as it is. A print, pattern or hint of embellishment would add some life to an otherwise basic piece.

Below: Knit top from Allen Solly

The Jeans

You can never go wrong with classic blue skinny or bootcut jeans. But with the range of options in colours, fits and textures, what should you choose? For daily wear, try a new fit you haven’t worn before- like the high waist or the flared styles.

Below: Bootcut skinny jeans from Levi’s.

Levisbootcut skinny jeans

The Light Cardigan

You’ll need plenty of light cardigans and sweaters over the next few months. Choose pieces with interesting details like zippers, buttons or even embellishments. Hot colours this season? Bold, brights, jewel tones!

Below: Cardigan from Sisley

The Jacket

In the past couple of years, blazers have slowly crept their way into every woman’s wardrobe, and not just as office wear. For this winter, try a wool-based blazer to keep you warm and stylish. Choose either a subtle pattern or an eye-catching monotone. Androgyny is in so wide lapels and a slightly oversized fit would work well.

Below: Checked blazer from Zara

The Pre-Christmas Must-Have

Gold and silver metallic finishes will be hot this party season, not just on dresses and tops, but also on jeans! Buy gold finish jeans in the run-up to the party season (which means right now!) and get labelled a trendsetter.

Below: Liquid metal jeans from Calvin Klein Jeans

The Footwear

No more open sandals or chappals. Switch to boots, booties and closed shoes to avoid getting cold feet (sorry, pun unintended).

Below: Shoes from Vanilla Moon

Vanilla Moon booties

The Day Bag

I believe bags are seasonless, but there’s something about soft textured bags that say winter. Subtle prints make them all the more desirable.

What are you investing in this season?

Chic Watch: Anita Dongre’s Jaipur Bride is a fascinating fashion video

Chic Watch: Anita Dongre’s Jaipur Bride is a fascinating fashion video

Fashion videos are not new. Internationally, luxury brands like Dior and Prada have created fascinating videos that are beyond product showcases, and standalone works of art.

In India, I think Anita Dongre is among the first Indian designers to present a fashion video (for her Timeless label). And what a video it is!

The Jaipur Bride is a two-minute video featuring Jyothsna Chakravarthy twirling in Anita Dongre’s signature lehengas with gota patti work. In the flared skirts and sexy cholis, the sublime bride wanders around the hauntingly beautiful Vidyadhar Ji Bagh in Jaipur.

The new age rendition of the Gayatri Mantra, Jyotsna’s mesmerizing eyes and the empty centuries-old fortress gave me goosebumps. I felt I was looking at a Rajasthani princess at her maternal home, waiting for her long-lost beloved prince. Take a look:

With ace cinematographer Colstan Julian’s skilled eye capturing the arid royal residence, and soundtrack by DJ Sayem World of Flowers, this video is not to be missed.

Anita Dongre Timeless red 1

I can’t wait for more designers to give video creation a shot. I would love to hear stories narrated through the videos- they would make epic short films. What better way to portray the twirl of fabric, the beauty of a garment than the audio visual medium?

Why Powder Room is a candid recount of Indian fashion

Why Powder Room is a candid recount of Indian fashion

Last year at the exhibits area of Lakme Fashion Week, I had a long talk with an upcoming designer from Kolkata. There weren’t too many people around and he was in a chatty mood so we ended up talking about things beyond the fashion shows. Among other things, he recalled his first fashion week party, when someone turned to him and asked, “Who are you wearing?” “They are so fake, and they love name-dropping,” he grinned. Just then, a designer friend dropped by, and both started making jokes about the appalling amount of bling they’d seen at the ongoing fashion week shows.

This kind of candour is unheard-of in the fashion industry, and this is the barrier Shefalee Vasudev has tried to break through in her first book Powder Room. In the book, the ex-Marie Claire editor explores the underbelly of Indian fashion, attempting to demystify the “beautiful” industry and focus on the fashion professionals’ not-so-glam life. In the process, she also comments on Indian society, its aspirations and the value attached to labels (high fashion brands and Bollywood icons).

Powder Room

Benarsis, Bling and Bollywood

Powder Room takes us on a journey across the fashion industry through a series of stories shared by fashion insiders. For instance, Tarun Tahiliani speaks about brides’ tantrums and bling, an aspiring model says she is willing to jump on the casting couch, and a family of Patola weavers shun Bollywood stars.

Yes, the Patola makes an appearance too- one of the several traditional weaves that’s dying slowly. There are only a few who understand the need to revive region-specific textiles even as boundaries disappear. So you can get a kanjeevaram sari that’s not made in that town, or Maharashtrian paithani that’s made in Varanasi. I’m not sure how many fashionistas would want to own any of these.

Shefalee has travelled across India while writing the book, meeting people and reporting their stories and experiences. A journalist to the core, her reportage is carefully worded to let the reader decide on what they feel about the spendthrift Ludhiana Ladies and the small-town ladies tailors “copy” big designers.

Crafts and Commercials

However, you do feel the indignation as she reports on a family of Patola weavers who struggle to keep the craft alive, even as they shun Bollywood stars and “commercial” versions of their products. The indignation turns to amusement as she writes about the “editorial support” luxury brands offered to Marie Claire.

The contrasts that exist in Indian society often creep their way into the narrative. The monthly salary of the ambitious sales assistant at Emporio Mall cannot buy her more than a belt at the store. Meanwhile, the rich seek out designer wares, and middle class women want Zara copies and “Katrina blouses”. I remember seeing Preity Zinta’s “Veer Zaara suits” at the local fabric stores and Mangaldas Market. And Vidya Balan’s saris are everywhere already.

As part of my experience working at a fashion brand, I’ve learnt that almost everything in fashion magazines is up for sale. All you got to do is the fill in the cheque with the right numbers. And if you read extensively on fashion, you’ll know how a writer “loves” this designer’s collection, and already has that brand’s dress on her “wishlist”. Shefalee calls for fashion writing to be part of mainstream journalism- backed by facts and investigative reporting rather than just gush pieces. After a famous Bollywood-cum-bridal designer’s fashion show, a journalist muttered, “That was ghastly!” But of course, that would never get reported, not even in the mildest form of real fashion criticism.

What should you do with Powder Room? Depends on who you are- if you’re part of the fashion industry or want to be, then read it. And if you’re not part of the industry and never want to be, you should read it. Fashion is, after all, a business like any other.

Powder Room by Shefalee Vasudev is available at leading booksellers and online stores.

Chic Looks for AW 12: Is the Indian man ready for Van Heusen’s World Traveller?

Chic Looks for AW 12: Is the Indian man ready for Van Heusen’s World Traveller?

For Autumn Winter 2012, the Van Heusen man travels across the world through his fashion choices. He takes his pick from Milan’s creative sensibility, Costa Brava’s party spirit and New York’s work ethic.

Van Heusen lookbook AW 12

So how and where does the Van Heusen man fit into the Indian man’s fashion aspirations?

Can the Indian man mix dusty pinks with steel greys like the well-styled Milan man? Not really. Does he have the charisma to carry off evening wear with engineering patterns, and matt and sheen contrasts? To some extent, maybe. And what about the no-nonsense New Yorker’s sharp and minimalistic look? Hmmm… unlikely.

Van Heusen suit AW 12

Van Heusen shirt AW 12

Yet- I think the Indian guy is ready to learn. India’s the land of travellers (ask the travel agencies) and armchair travelers, and the man in the cubicle is enjoying the new Mad Men season, looking forward to James Bond in Skyfall, buffing up at the local gym, and dreaming of a holiday in France with a special someone. Why then should he not relish and adopt sophisticated global fashion?

Yes, Indian men are gearing up for international fashion. Hopefully retaining their local styles.

This post is the first in a series discussing the AW 12 campaigns/ collections of various fashion brands.
