Living a smart life

My sponge cake batter is yellow and fluffy and almost ready to bake. The oven is pre-heated, and I pour the batter into my cake tin. I remember my mom’s instructions very clearly, “Remember, the cake should be baked for nine minutes, and nine minutes only.”

The oven dial is not exactly accurate, and I need a timer. I will have to scramble to get my phone from my bedroom, open the clock app, seek the timer and set it to nine minutes.

Or I could just say, “Ok Google, set a timer for nine minutes.”

And when nine minutes are up, my cake will be all soft and sweet and scrumptious.

The uses of my smart home assistant extend beyond the kitchen.

I use it to get a weather update. My mom uses it to discover new recipes. The husband uses it to get the news.

And this nifty little smart device is not the only smart thing at home.

In our small household, we have a few smart devices between us. And they’ve made our lives easier. My productivity has gone up (I work from home), and it’s easier to organize my tasks and errands. My home feels cozier, warmer and even more personalized.

But should you invest in such devices?

There’s only one answer here: A resounding YES. We need a Smart Home in the 21st century.

Why? Because smart devices will give you so much more than you could ever imagine. It’s time for a #SmartHomeRevolution.

Here’s how they make your life easier.

Unwind and relax

You come home from a long day at work. You want to relax on the couch, listen to soothing music, and catch up on football scores.  And you want to do all that without lifting a tired finger from your tired body.

So what do you do?

You ask your home assistant to do it—it will dim the lights to your favourite setting, play your favourite Kishore Kumar songs at low volume and narrate the scores of the Premier League matches.

Stay on top of things

I hate to say this, but old age is quickly catching up to me. I can’t remember everything anymore. So when I need to keep track of things to buy, who else do I turn to but my handy assistant?

Starting a shopping list with just my voice, all I need to do is keep adding things to the list and then access it when I go shopping.

And then I can also remember to pay the utility bills, the domestic help and credit card bills on time, using the voice reminders.

Learn more about the world

The other day a kid was caught using a smart home device to do his math homework. I think that’s brilliant, and it turns out the kid later thanked the assistant. The kid’s mother was rather amused as well.

Arithmetic apart, the world is a wonder, and any curious soul is filled with mind boggling questions that need precise, accurate answers. The smart home assistant comes to the rescue. How heavy is an elephant? What is the currency of Japan? When was Akbar born? Who fought in the Second World War?

Useful for homework, useful for work, useful for kids, teens, grownups and grandparents.

Get entertained

It’s party time! Get your home assistant to do the entertaining so you can focus on having a good time with your buddies. Your handy assistant will set the perfect mood lighting by syncing with your Smart lights, pull out recipes that will impress your guests, and even play your choice of movies and music.

Meanwhile, the kids have fun play dates with their little friends when they have quizzes, games and nursery rhymes for company.

Feel independent

Seniors and differently abled people often struggle with simple day-to-day tasks that we take for granted, like booking a cab on their phone. The font is too small, the location is difficult to pin on the map, and the phone app itself can be confusing.

But a virtual assistant can provide tremendous support. They can book cabs easily through a series of voice commands. And then, they can order food, book movie tickets, and listen to their favourite devotional text… without needing to ask anyone for help.

How wonderful is that!

Get fit

When the husband embarked on his weight loss journey, his constant companion was his fitness band. It kept him motivated, alert, active and engaged. The result: around a dozen kilos lighter, he ran a half marathon in less than six months!

And if running and exercise is not your thing, your smart devices can help you with your wellness activities. De-stress with meditation and sleep guidance, access healthy recipes and count your calories by simply asking your assistant.

And so, say yes to #GetFitwithFlipkart.

Keep yourself secure

My friend in Mumbai uses a Smart Camera to keep an eye on her bedridden mother’s household in Bengaluru. With this easy-to-use technology, she ensures her mother’s needs are attended to at all times, day or night.

When I heard about the daylight theft in my neighbours’ house a few months ago when they were away, my first thought was—why didn’t they have home cameras? With such inexpensive yet super useful tools, their hard-earned money would be secure.

Still sitting on the fence about creating a smart home? It’s a new year, it’s time for an upgrade!

Drool-worthy sports shoes are here!

There’s been a sudden surge of sports shoes at home recently. Between S and me, we have five pairs of various brands. Throughout my 13 years of schooling, I only had one sports pair: white canvas with laces, which had to be polished with thick and gooey white polish. We called them “tennis shoes”.

The few times I did go shopping for sports shoes, we’d fix a budget in mind and make a trip to Vama at Peddar Road. I’d try on a few pairs and then the most comfortable and “sensible” white pair was selected.

And then, for many years, I didn’t really need to buy sports shoes (I’ve never been a sporty or running or jogging or walking person). The sports shoes came out of the cupboard for holidays, vacations, picnics etc. And the shoes remained white and nice (and boring) for a long time. And then last year my white Nike pair (with a blue sswoosh) gave in, after several years of faithful service and support, and it was time to go sports shoe shopping again. I had started walking and jogging a bit and wanted good, no, great shoes. But when I went to the mall to take a look, I was blown away. I saw a mind-boggling range of sports shoes- different colours, textures, designs, some with fancy names, some with cool technology… and with several different uses. Shoes to wear with jeans, shoes for running, for walking, for tennis, for football, for fancy clothes… I was spoilt for choice. I finally settled for Reebook’s ZPump shoes in pink. Yes, PINK. And they look great, fit wonderfully, and have been holding me up for very long walks and runs.

Meanwhile, S needed to replace his old Puma pair. Again, white shoes, red logo. He’d decided to take up running (completed his first half marathon last week, yay!). S has bought three pairs since last year, two black and one blue, and he’s already looking for the next pair.

The transformation of our shoe rack (and our fitness level) has been incredible. We now own a colourful shoe rack filled with awesome-looking sports shoes.

Here are some awesome sports shoes lining up the stores these days, each with something “new” to offer, guaranteed to make you stand out in a crowd.

Colour crazy: Boys, make a statement with these black and gold MetaRun shoes from ASICS.

Texture play: The two-toned mesh of the Skechers GORun Vortex shoes look super dynamic on the field.

Sporty but feminine: Ladies, here’s the purple sports shoe we’ve all been dreaming of! From Power Shoes (available at Bata).

Stars and stripes: When textures and colours abound, can prints be far behind? These patterned sneakers from Vans’ Americana collection will go great with jeans.

High on tech: You just can’t go wrong with Reebok’s ZPump Fusion shoes (I own a pair!). The shoe molds itself to my foot and use the pump for cushioning and no-pain running.

7 fashionable Diwali inspirations

Come Diwali every year, and I’m usually digging into my wardrobe for a newish Indian ensemble. And it’s usually a safe style, very me, but also very, very typical of me. This Diwali, I’m trying to be a bit different, drawing inspiration from some new looks. So I’ve put together a lookbook of sorts to get me going on the ideas. There’s still a week to Diwali (and this weekend I will be in India, yay!), and all of these ideas are easily doable. 😀

Of course I can’t try all of these ideas, but a girl can dream, can’t she?

Don a jacket

It can be short like a waistcoast or long like an anarkali, it could be embroidered or block printed… “A plain kurta paired with a printed or embroidered short jacket is the perfect alternative to a dupatta,” says Rahuul Jashnani, managing director of Jashn. “Button it or just let it loose, or wear it on your sari for a bold and edgy and daring look.” I agree.

Go long, long, long

If you’re a vertically-challenged like me, then long silhouettes can be quite exciting. Plus longer the length, the grander you look, and the more elegant you feel.

Wrap a gorgeous dupatta

I’m moving on from mere contrast dupattas. I’d rather wrap a stunning dupatta around me to draw the attention. I’m in love with these ones from Gaurang, or something embellished-border like this one below.

Try a shirt-like blouse with a sari

It may seem that only Sonam Kapoor can pull off a shirt with a sari. Maybe yes, maybe no. Well, we won’t know till we try it, right?

(Sonam Kapoor wearing Anupama Dayal)

Sport a bindi

I’m not even talking about Gwen Stefani here. It’s Indian, so why not place a cute bindi on the forehead? So feminine!

Mix shades in jewellery

Gold and white are a classic combo, but well, it’s a little safe. I love admiring jewellery with coloured stones- blue, pink, green…. “A mix of diamond, polki and jadau jewellery with bright colourful gemstones in innovative ways and eclectic styles add appeal to any outfit,” says Aakas Barmecha of Yoube Jewellery.

Fashion Recall: Back to the Future

Back to the Future was all the rage last week, as the date of Marty McFly’s arrival from Back to the Future II came and flew by on October 21, 2015. The wonderful Spanish website Fashionisima posted a great piece on fashion from Back to the Future. Since it’s in Spanish, I’ve translated the important bits here (used only my Spanish skills for this, no Google Translate :-D).

Back to the Future jeans

And what look was he [Marty McFly] wearing in the year 2015? Jeans (they never get old!), an auto-dry and auto-adjustable jacket, a cap—in the words of the Doctor, what all kids wear, and the jewel of the crown: the Nike [shoes] without laces that adjust to your feet. Important detail to note: the pockets in Back to the Future are worn externally.

I don’t think jeans will ever fade from human history—they will be continuously reimagined with different fabrics, cuts and washes.

Nike didn’t want to waste this product placement and announced much later that the shoes from Back to the Future would go on sale… In 2011 they made a first attempt. Attempt, I say, because it didn’t get great reception despite its great promotion. The complaint of the fans? That the shoes don’t auto-adjust to your feet like in the Zemeckis film. Nike backed down, and has promised that in 2015 it will release definitive Nikes with superior technology in a limited edition. Dear Nike managers, that time is upon us, and it’s October 21, 2015.

Great idea for brand promotion, Nike. But please be realistic and honest with fans. Are such shoes technically possible in the forseeable future? Do tell.

The women from Back to the Future II paint their eyes in geometric shapes and silver tones, which doesn’t deviate much from the looks in these images:

Back to the Future makeup

Something that they couldn’t have depicted better is humans’ obsession with technology… In Back to the Future [they make it with their] futuristic glasses—see the attempt by Google Glasses below – but the Apple Watch could also be adapted.

back-to-the-future-fashion-02

Oh yeah, a watch that can check email, glasses that can capture images or search for a keyword… who knows what’s next in wearables?

Watch it. Get fit.

My Facebook feed these days is stuffed with friends, school mates, ex-colleagues, far-off cousins and random people achieving unbelievable fitness feats. They are running full marathons, cycling across the countryside, losing 60 pounds, climbing mountains and sculpting Hugh Jackman-like bods.

And so, the hubby and I have been bitten by the fitness bug too. It’s a good thing, of course, and discovering that the old jeans fit again is oh-so-satisfying. Mr S got into fitness mode first and August was his birthday month, so I went hunting online for a gift. On a whim, I googled “fitness watch” and that’s when I discovered THE PERFECT GIFT. The mind-boggling range of wearable fitness devices—watches, wrist bands and clip-ons—is enough to get any fitness enthusiast salivating.

These fitness devices are amazing—while the basic ones track how much you walked or ran, some of the advanced fitness wearables monitor heart rate, sleeping patterns and calories burnt.

And the good news for a fashionista like me is that they look stylish too. Designed as chic minimal pieces, fitness devices have plenty of features and colour options.

Anyways, if you’re looking to get fit and need just the right kick in the rear, investing your hard-earned salary in a fitness watch might just get you in the mood. Or you might just have found the perfect Diwali gift for a special someone, family member or friend.

Now that Mr S’s Fitbit Charge HR has become an indispensable part of his life, he’s promised to gift me a fitness watch for my happy budday this month. Now all I need to do is get on the treadmill. 😉

My picks:

Feature-packed pieces: Fitbit Surge (Rs 19,990) and Jawbone UP3 (Rs 14,999)

For serious runners who want GPS: Garmin Vivoactive (Rs 17,660)

My shoe story and new season wishlist

I have only two pairs of shoes right now, not counting my sports shoes. I’ve been living with just these two pairs since four months now (no kidding). Besides, autumn/ winter collections have hit the stores, so it’s time to invest in a new pair. Or two. Or several.

But I’m a fussy shoe buyer and there’s good reason for that. I have tiny feet with a difficult size, and so when I buy shoes, I have to buy a pair that looks great, fits wonderfully, and lasts me a long long time.

Sigh… here in Yangon, like almost everywhere else, size is THE main problem, but that doesn’t stop me from checking out shoes like my life depended on them. As they say, if you can’t wear them, admire them. Okay, I just made that up.

Anyways here are some droolworthy shoes I’d like to own. You are welcome to drool too.

I can see these slip-ons from Accessorize jazzing up all my casual outfits.

Bollywood Fashion Guide: Kangana Ranaut in Tanu Weds Manu Returns

In my previous blog post, I did a look breakdown of Deepika Padukone’s indo-chic look in Piku. In Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Kangana Ranaut’s character Tanuja Trivedi (Tanu) is also seen in contemporary Indian wear but her definition of indo-chic is drastically different from Piku’s style.

Kangana Ranaut Tanu Weds Manu Returns

Tanu is a free-spirited quirky girl who loves having fun. As a married woman in London, she opts for Indian styles. So she wears saris in public, complete with mangalsutra and very noticeable sindoor. Her saris are mostly retro-style lacey ones, and in the opening scene she has bundled up in a beige trench coat over her sari.

Kangana Ranaut sari Tanu Weds Manu

Once back in India, the pre-marriage Tanu takes over, and she’s back to her colourful self. In the earlier film Tanu Weds Manu Kangana Ranaut opted mostly for greens and blues, but in this film her look is bolder than ever, choosing bright pinks and oranges.

Printed kurta or tee

Bright printed or crushed dupatta

Accessories: Jhumkas (her favourite carried forward from Tanu Weds Manu), necklaces and stacks of bangles

Makeup: Lots of it, and usually very matchy-matchy. So if Tanu’s wearing a pink kurta, she’s applied pink blush and pink lipstick. And oh, there’s also a tiny bindi and tonnes of mascara and even fake eyelashes!

Style & Shopping Guide: Deepika Padukone’s Piku look

FOUND: Deepika Padukone’s kurta from Piku! (Read on to know more).

In Piku, Deepika Padukone has one of her most unglamourous on-screen avatars. Here’s a complete style breakdown of Piku and where you can shop Deepika Padukone’s look.

Deepika Padukone in Piku

Deepika Padukone as Piku

Deepika Padukone’s character Piku is a working woman and always in a rush due to her father’s morning drama. No high-end designer wear or heavy makeup for her. Instead there’s minimal styling and accessories. Piku’s look is relatable and girl-next-door and indo-chic but deliberately non-colourful.

Clothes seem to be thrown together, her hair is almost a mess, and there isn’t much time for makeup and accessories either. She carries one big bag in which she can dump everything.
