Rohit Bal: Get your festive cover-ups

I’ve never been a big fan of wearing cover-ups (jackets and coats) with Indian wear, despite the frequent appearance on the ramp. But when it comes back show after show, and appears on Rohit Bal’s couture collection, I decided it’s time to take this almost-trend a bit seriously.

At HDIL India Couture Week, Rohit Bal presented all kinds of cover-ups to go with Indian wear: long coats and cropped jackets with gold embellishments and zardozi work. He paired them with lehengas, full circle kalidar kurtas and velvet blouses.

And why should guys be left behind? Here’s an interesting jacket for men, festive and fun:

Will you wear a jacket or coat this Diwali? Tell us!

Guys, would you wear velvet like Big B?

Amitabh Bachchan kicked off the season premiere of Kaun Banega Crorepati 4 last night with a song-dance-monologue performance, wearing a velvet suit, among other outfits designed by Vikram Phadnis. The suit had a crest of sorts over the left breast pocket and on the back, in what seems to be zardosi work.

(FYI, in the quiz show Amitabh Bachchan will be wearing bespoke Ravi Bajaj suits).

Noteworthy: Mr Bachchan has worn velvet earlier. Last week, he walked the ramp for Karan Johar and Varun Bahl at HDIL India Couture Week in a long black double breasted coat with a high velvet collar.

Seinfeld’s George Costanza once said, “I would drape myself in velvet if it were socially acceptable.” Seems like his time has come.

So guys, would you drape yourself in velvet? Tell us!

WIFW: 15 new faces to scorch Delhi ramp

Fifteen new models will make their Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week debut later this month, to be held in New Delhi. Here’s a glimpse of some of them.

Chic Phones: Let’s bling

[tweetmeme source=”spkngchic” only_single=false]

If you’re already bored of statement necklaces, statement rings, and statement what-nots, it’s time to get a new accessory to flaunt—your mobile phone. And with the blingy mobile phones out there, it’s easy to make heads turn. So check out these two seriously fashionable handsets and see your friends go green with envy.

To start with, there’s the Micromax Q55 Bling with Swarovski “elements”. That’s the one grabbing attention in the Twinkle Khanna TV ad. The phone is very feminine, and I’m sure teenage and college girls are lapping them all over India.

Of course, we never judge a book by its cover, so we looked at its features, and the phone does seem to have the essentials—a 2 MP camera, pre-loaded Facebook app, Opera mini and Nimbuzz. The price—very affordable! Rs 7000 approximately.

For those believe that only gold glitters, set your eyes on the Nokia N97 mini Gold edition. Yup, you read that correctly, it’s gold! The phone is plated with 18 carat gold, with a matching headset.

Flaunting the phone will surely speak volumes about your style and bank balance, because the phone is close to Rs 40,000 (really!). In terms of features, it’s the same as the regular Nokia N97 mini, the gold adding a luxurious touch. (If only the phone was on Android, instead of Symbian.)

Speaking Chic says: Why should mobile phones be only for calling, texting and tweeting, right? What we’d like to see next: an Apple iPhone plated in white gold, and a diamond-encrusted Blackberry. Sounds too far-fetched? Maybe not.

Fashion Qs: White to wear?

[tweetmeme source=”spkngchic” only_single=false]

Speaking Chic launches a new series: Fashion Qs. In this series, we answer readers’ style and fashion queries. Here’s a pertinent question from a reader:

White Lies

Hi Speaking Chic, recently I read that  white is the colour of the season—little white dresses, white blouses, white pants etc. But it’s the monsoon here, and I want to avoid wearing whites for obvious reasons. But then I a celeb watch story that said pop colours are in. That’s in complete contradiction to whites! So what colours do I wear the next next couple months? And what do I do with my whites?

— Shaili, Mumbai

Dear Shaili, fashion trends are ever so confusing, especially when you like to read a number of mags or websites. Here’s the bad news: each editor has her own view of what to wear and what not to. But you’re right about the whites and the pop colours—both are in. High fashion stores were teeming with whites, while some some are brimming over with colours like electric blue, green and red.

And the good news: white is almost as timeless as black (especially in seasonless Mumbai). So it would be good to wear them on non-rainy days (you don’t want to be the next Zeenat Aman in Pukar), you could also keep them aside for later use. Or you could wear your whites during the day, saving the pop colours for night. Or team your white blouse with a dark jacket or fancy shrug for a dinner out with friends. And ride the bright colour trend with an eye-catching bag or clutch.

Everyone has an opinion on fashion, including guys. Two brave and smart guys two Speaking Chic readers, both guys. Both are techies, both recently back from the US, and both wrote in separately to Speaking Chic. Both had the same complaint—women (and men) in oversized sunglasses.

Yes, we girls love those. But the guys hate them just as much. Mumbai-based Chandresh’s litany of complaints about sunglasses started with him seeking a good pair in the US. “The first time I tried the cool Ray-Ban Aviators, they turned out so big for my face, I could fit both my eyes in one lens.” And then begins his story of woe. “Few years back, I remember watching Paris Hilton wearing big sunglasses covering half her face. I figured she was just trying to get attention with such stupid glasses… And the next thing I see? Girls wearing glasses that have been carved out of their bedroom windows.”

Meanwhile, Satish opines that the big sunglasses hides the wearer’s beauty. The Hyderabad techie says, “These glasses look really funny when worn even by beautiful women. They hide their beauty, and all time and effort they spend to get their eyes to sparkle goes in vain.”

Good point, Satish. FYI, Bollywood actor Priyanka Chopra is known to never step out without her large sunglasses:

So what’s in store for the future of sunglasses? The guys are optimistic. “Perhaps time will heal everything including bad taste,” says Chandresh.

And Satish wrote: “Whether men we (men) like it or not, women wear what they like, and some of them end up looking funny!”

Point taken, gentlemen. But will the ladies listen? Take our poll and tell us what you think!

Chic Leggings: Going graphic

[tweetmeme source=”spkngchic” only_single=false]

I see graphic t-shirts everywhere I go. Girls wearing them, their moms wearing them, on the racks (including at Zara recently), in window displays… And then I came across a pair of graphic-printed leggings, at a high street store abroad. They were certainly eye-catching, though I found them a bit daring for me. I didn’t think I had the panache and confidence to carry it off.

Then I saw Sonam Kapoor sporting a similar pair in a recent interview. Yes, the same Sonam Kapoor who wore badly-fitted anarkali-churidar not too long ago. Surprisingly (or perhaps not), she carried off the graphic tights really well. Paired with a long black tee, it was a deadly combo that elongated Sonam’s super long legs. Check out the TV grab below and don’t miss Sonam’s bejewelled clutch.

sonam_kapoor_graphic_tights

Needless to say, I’m giving these tights a second thought, but I think I’ll wear them only when I’m on TV. 😉 Would you wear graphic-print leggings? Tell us!
