Have you ever worn a gown? Or even been to a party or event where you need to wear one? You know what we mean—red carpet events are like the awards ceremonies or glam celebrations where stars and wannabes spend hours getting dressed, walk down a small carpet-laden path and pose for pictures, the women mostly in gowns.

Closer home, the sari was the red carpet garment of choice for decades, till a new breed of actors appeared on the scene: Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Bipasha Basu. They’re smart, they’re savvy and they love their designer gowns.

Sure, evening wear gowns look great, glamourous and sexy, but how many of us have either worn one or even had an opportunity to

wear one? In the few parties I’ve attended, I barely saw any women wearing gowns– and why should they? You need to be statuesque,

slim and pretty much in shape to carry them off. If you get your jewellery wrong, or your hair, the whole look seems out of whack.

So the good news is– everyone’s among the glitterati is either wearing floor-length gowns or making them (at Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2011, we lost count of the number of designers with gowns in their collection). The bad news– we’ve hardly seen women like you and me wearing them, even at posh dos. Dresses—yes, gowns—nope!

And besides, how many “red carpet” events do us ordinary women attend anyways?

Which brings us to our fashion poll: how many of you wear gowns? Or have you ever worn a gown? Do you think you’ll ever wear one?

Chic Trends: Metals, whites and pop for summer parties

For the party animals, partying never stops. And for non-party animals, party invites may be few and far between, but they’re always fun. Party animal or not, if you’re partying this summer, do it in style with our chic and trendy picks.

Go Metallic

Metallic dresses and jackets were party staples late 2010 and they’re still around. Update last year’s wardrobe by opting for a muted metallic look—choose a dress that’s got just the right touch of gold or silver, rather than screaming metal all over.

White, or something like it

While white dresses and gowns are making a comeback this summer, we recommend  whites with prints and colour blocking, along with off-whites for the ladies who want to look sophisticated. Choose a dress with an easy silhouette or drapes, pair with a pop or metallic belt, clutch or shoes, and party all night!

Pop it!

For the bolder party girls, we’re loving the pop-coloured dresses this season. Pick a dress in your favourite bright colour (solid or printed), and pair with neutral pumps and clutch.

Tresmode Calendar Launch: Chic shoes, and an eeks!

Fashionable footwear brand Tresmode launched its first calendar couple days ago at a fun Sunday brunch in Mumbai.

About the Tresmode Calendar

High on fashion, the pictures are shot by photographer Gaurav Sawn and the calendar is designed by Jaideep Thackeray.

I’ve already hung up the calendar on my bedroom wall, and can’t help but admire the Vizyon dresses, and some of the Curio Cottage jewellery is now on my wishlist. Some of the Tresmode shoes are gorgeous.

Our favourite pics: July and September.

Tresmode calendar September

While the calendar pictures are gorgeous, we wished we could use it like an ordinary calendar as well. Like some space around dates to jot down birthdays, meetings, weddings and other events. After all, fashionistas have packed social calendars.

Fashion Eeeeks of the launch

Meanwhile, at the brunch, starlets hobnobbed; and where there are “famous people”, there are bound to be fashion several faux pas.

But Rohit Roy’s checked pants gets our vote for the Fashion Eeeeks of the day. Yes, we know checks are in vogue, but please spare us this. And what’s with the man cleavage? Women never liked it. So why don’t men just get it?

Chic and easy party looks: Sequinned & studded

There are party dresses, and then there are some more party dresses. But how do you transform a cocktail or evening dress into a complete party outfit? It’s all in the accessories! We show you how to get the right party looks with two classic sets of accessories: Sequins/ shimmer and studded.

Speaking Chic tip: Start with your dress as a “base” and play around with colours, accessories and jewellery till you find the right combo. You can choose one offbeat accessory if you like to experiment.

Party dresses: Let’s paint the town red, white and green!

Red dresses are this winter’s LBDs, or so they say. But red isn’t the only colour popping up all over town. Other rocking colours for party dresses I’ve been spotting are green and white. Check out our top trendy party dress picks in these colours.

Party colour: Red
Red is an instant attention-grabber. If you’re bold, love being the cynosure at a party, then red is your colour for 2011.

Party colour: Green
After seeing some fabulous green evening dresses, I’ve begun to believe that green is the most underrated colour in fashion. What say?

The colour of snow and winter, and can make you stand out among a sea of dressed-in-black partygoers. Add pop-coloured accessories and makeup to avoid looking too pale.

Party dresses: 2010 trends you can still wear

As you ring in the new year, you’re ready to look like you’re in 2011. After all, 2010 will be so last decade. But if you’re stuck with past season party dresses you want to wear for the big bash on New Year’s eve, don’t lose hope just yet. Some trends are still pretty much out there, and  you won’t look outdated.

Trend 1: Military
Spring/Summer 2010 was hot on the militry trend. Khakis, epaulettes, camouflage prints ruled the ramps and streets. Choose to go all-out military with boots, or soften your look with a feminine accessory like a bow or rosette clutch.

Gown and shrug from Sailex NG.

Trend 2: Drapes
Draped dresses became popular early 2009. They’re feminine, graceful and can make a woman look really sexy.

Dress from Vizyon.

Trend 3: Bodycon
Another oldish trend. If you’ve been working out hard in the gym, slip into a bodycon dress to flaunt your toned body.

Chic Party Makeup: New Year 2011 guide (part 1)

Be the quintessential party animal on New Year’s Eve with makeup to usher in 2011 looking your chic-est. Speaking Chic illuminates some top makeup trends.

Smokey eyes
Classic look, but not an easy one to try at home. Too much eyeshadow and you look like a witch. Too little, and it doesn’t make an impact. Give your smokey eyes the 2011 twist by ditching the black eye shadow in favour of grey, silver, teal, taupe or dark blue. Add some sparkle or glitter on your eyelids or corners of your eyes to get the perfect party look. Smokin’ hot!

Speaking Chic tip: Get your smokey eyes right with the help of this video.

Dewy skin
MAC mineralize foundationIf you’ve got the confidence to carry off a clean makeup look, the dewy skin look is just right for  you. The best way to look nude yet glowing is to apply a foundation that gives your skin the right amount of sheen. I use MAC’s Mineralize Satin Finish Foundation for this.

Speaking Chic tip: Apply some loose powder after the foundation. This might take away some of your dewiness initially, but as your skin gets oilier during the party, the glow comes right back.

Which trend will you party with?
