Buy: Kitsch Umbrellas

I’m bored of black umbrellas, floral print umbrellas and the kiddie umbrellas. If you agree with me, then opt for a fun umbrella that expresses the quirky side of your personality. Nida Mahmood’s new range of umbrellas is 100% Bollywood, with visuals and one-liners from classic movies and songs. I like the “Ek Ladki Bheegi Bhaagi si” umbrella.

Ogle: Vu-Tarun Tahiliani Couture TV

In a unique fashion-technology collaboration, veteran designer Tarun Tahiliani has designed a high-end TV for Vu Technologies. The 3D, 55-inch TV has been designed with unusual ornamental patterns constructed through the use of calligraphy and geometry. The fine use of latticework in muted Swarovski elements adds a subtle luxury feel to the TV. And tech lovers will enjoy the in-built PC with Windows software, graphics card and other cool stuff. WLIFW S/S 2012: Day 3 highlights

A glimpse of the top collections on Day 3 of Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2012:

Divyam Mehta

The designer used bold kantha stitch with deliberate flaws along with Japanese techniques for a easy-going collection. Divyam used lighter fabrics like linen, mul and silk chiffon to offset the dark-ish colour palette (using lots of indigo).

Hemant & Nandita

Hemant & Nandita’s collection was called “Happily Unmarried” and we know why. Smile Women walked freely wearing body-hugging bodices with gathered skirts. We loved the abstract digital prints inspired from flora. I’d love to wear them!

Ela by Joyjit Talukdar

Playing with “engineered” textures and multi-dimensional silhouettes,  Joyjit treated fabrics in various ways to create a variety of textures and accessories. He paid special attention to waistlines and yokes.

Nida Mahmood

A kitsch lover, Nida Mahmood’s show and collection was Bollywood-inspired. This time the designer focussed on the geeky look, and combined bold colours with digital and tie-and-dye prints for the quirky Indian woman.

Nikasha Tawadey

Off-whites and soft colours, flounces and loose tunics—Nikasha Tawadey’s collection gears you up for a dreamy summer. This summer will be about keeping it simple and sweet.

Shantanu Goenka

From regal prints to rich zardozi, Shantanu Goenka’s Marie Antoinette-themed collection had it all. Using vintage silhouettes, the designer mixed colours like pastel colours like pink with beige and gold. The construction techniques used were ruffles, pintucks, life-like embellishments and appliqué. BTW, Kangana Ranaut made a ramp appearance for the designer.

Who is your pick of Day 3 at Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2012?

Chic Friday Fun: Prints you never thought you’d see or wear

Move over the “Little Miss” tshirt series (Little Miss Chatterbox etc), and Wake Up Sid’s Garfield tshirts. We’ve dug up some prints you never thought you’d ever see, let alone wear. But they’re out there, they’re fun, and you can actually wear some of them!

We picked out some fun prints and object motifs and rated them on wearability on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 being not at all wearable, 5 being totally wearable!).

Autorickshaws

Sabah Khan’s Sabashe collection at Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2011 was kitschy chic (tongue twister!) and inspired by Mumbai’s public transport, especially the rickshaws aka ricks. Ricks appeared on tops, pants, skirts and even waist pouches!

Shells

Why go to the beach to collect shells when they can come to you? (Playsuit from French Connection).

Bicycles

With yet another mode of transport, Nida Mahmood’s Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2011 collection was about the Indian roadie, with the bicycle representing the common man. Paired with the designer’s signature bags in shocking pink and turmeric yellow, it was a casual Indian summer look.
