Bollywood Fashion : Why Sonakshi Sinha is a fashion flop in OUATIMD, and Akshay Kumar isn’t

Bollywood Fashion : Why Sonakshi Sinha is a fashion flop in OUATIMD, and Akshay Kumar isn’t

I saw Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara (OUATIMD) over the weekend, and I wasn’t impressed by the movie, and definitely not by the fashion. Sonakshi Sinha’s costumes, designed / styled by Manish Malhotra were a complete let-down. Here’s why:
Sonakshi was not wearing the right fits

OUATIMD- Sonakshi Sinha

Sonakshi Sinha’s wardrobe disaster in Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara is primarily because of the ill-fitting outfits that she’s wearing. Yes, she’s a plus-sized actor, but that doesn’t excuse the tailoring. The knee-length kurtas were too tight for her– unsightly bulge jutted out at the sleeves and the back.

Sonakshi’s outfits were wrong for her body type
The camera adds 10 pounds and the silver screen another 10, I’d say. While the costume design team had to stick to the styles and trends of the era, Sonakshi looked bloated and way too plump next to the fit Akshay Kumar and skinny Imran Khan. Tweaking the outfits to better suit her body shape would have helped. Like the kurtas could be a bit looser on the chest and hips, and the necklines should have been higher.

The era was all wrong

OUATIMD- Sonakshi Sinha
Contrast dupattas are a fairly recent phenomenon, so Sonakshi shouldn’t have been wearing them in the movie. They weren’t around in the 1970s and 80s. I remember my mom and aunts wearing dupattas that were the same colour as their kurta and salwar. And the little prints on her kurtas can be found in any bazaar, department store or ethnic brand store in India today!

The costumes didn’t match the character
Sonakshi plays a naive aspiring actor from small-town Kashmir, and a girl with such a background would NOT be wearing such low necklies or plunging backs. And the dupatta would actually cover up her chest, not play peek a boo.

Sonakshi’s makeup could be so much better
Blush, eye shadow, liner and lipstick, all put together in a single look made me feel the makeup artist could have done a far better job. Sonakshi looked lovely in the scenes in which there was no hint of lipstick or rouge. And oh, the silver nail polish. Really?
Is the off-screen Sonakshi more fashionable?

OUATIMD-Sonakshi-Sinha
BTW, Sonakshi looked lovely in some of the events promoting the film, much more real and relaxed, and carrying similar looks but looking much more fashionable and comfortable. The fits seemed right this time. What say?

A word on Akshay Kumar’s costumes

Akshay Kumar looked pretty much the gangster comfortable in his own skin. While I thought Akshay’s acting was over-the-top, his look was very well styled by Kunal Rawal.

OUATIMD-Akshay Kumar

Kunal dressed Akshay Kumar in solid and striped shirts in colours like like deep wine, burgundy, and steel grey teamed with muted jackets in greys, navy and black. Unmissable accessories defined the man and his persona– a mix of classy (Cartier watch), trendy (over-sized dark sunglasses) and wanting to show who’s boss (shiny and pointy shoes). Slick and stylish!

BTW, another great piece of movie styling by Kunal Rawal is Aisha (click here to read about the Aisha costumes).

Bollywood Fashion: Wear Matru ki Bijlee ka Mandola’s looks the easy way

Bollywood Fashion: Wear Matru ki Bijlee ka Mandola’s looks the easy way

As expected from a movie based in rural India,  there’s not much fashion in Vishal Bharadwaj’s latest venture Matru ki Bijlee ka Mandola. With costumes by Payal Saluja, the clothes are rustic and raw as they should be, with each key character having a distinct style statement. Here they are (and how you can wear them):

Matru (Imran Khan)
Matru is not what he seems to be. Though he serves the zamindar, his revolutionary spirit is camouflaged well. Hence his look is decidedly blend-in-the-crowd and inconspicuous.

Imran Khan in Matru ki Bijlee ka Mandola

What he’s wearing: He dons a cotton kurta with sleeves folded or rolled up, teamed with worn-out waistcoat or leather jacket,  jeans and long scarf (the rural gamcha) wound around his neck.

How to wear: Both guys and girls can ape this ambiguous look, except perhaps for the gold balis and kada on his wrist. Instead of kurtas, try a long-sleeved tee for a more “cityish” look.

Recommendation: Kurta from Fab India

Bijlee (Anushka Sharma)
She’s cute but bold, and has got tattoos at the oddest of places to prove she’s rebellious.

(Picture courtesy: Official movie page on Facebook)

What she’s wearing: Anushka is in chunky  knits/ shawls and oversized crochet tops over camisoles, with a skirt or hot pants and lace stockings. Her hair is usually a mess, but the eyeliner is never out of place. On her wedding day, she changes from shorts to a calf-length ghagri in what seems to be a jiffy.

How to wear: Baggy tops are hot right now so wear them much as you like, but skip the shorts and wear jeans with boots instead. It’s grungy enough without being inappropriate.

Accessories tip: Anushka’s accessories are quirky earrings (like the long feathers-on-chains in Oye Boy Charlie) and several leather bands around her wrist. All of these are easily available at local and high street brands.

Recommendations: Cable knit cardigan from Zara, Color Carnival earrings (available on ShopInOnIt).

Mandola (Pankaj Kapur)
The most complex character in the movie, Mandola is the rich zamindar who lives a luxurious life. On an ordinary day, he chooses between a Rolls Royce, Bentley and limousine and has a guy to hold his sunglasses for him.

Pankaj Kapur in Matru ki Bijlee ka Mandola

What he’s wearing: He dresses elegantly in tailored suits, complete with matching pocket squares and scarves. And oh, very British hats! Unfortunately his Haryanvi paunch requires him to wear unattractive suspenders. Pankaj Kapur may not be a handsome actor,  but his character’s irony is not lost given the context of rural India.

How to wear: Most men may choose to wear coloured suits now, but the best bets are still black, grey and navy. Ties are optional.

Recommendation: Suit from Anita Dongre

Bollywood Fashion: Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu’s Kareena Kapoor dresses quirky, Imran Khan goes formal

Bollywood Fashion: Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu’s Kareena Kapoor dresses quirky, Imran Khan goes formal

I watched Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu over the weekend, and found it a refreshing movie in more ways than one. The movie was fun, and the actors’ wardrobes were stylish, which is what you’d expect from a Dharma Productions film.

Kareena-Imran Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu

I was happy to note that Manish Malhotra (Kareena Kapoor’s designer for the movie) managed to bring an element of fun, quirkiness and style to Kareena’s wardrobe. Here’s a breakdown of Kareena’s look.

What Kareena is wearing:

Kareena plays a hair stylist Riana in Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu. Now if you go to the salon I go to, you’d know that most young stylists have their unique way of dressing showing their creative side. Riana is just like that. She wears a range of colours, dresses casually, and looks like a chic mess. 🙂

Kareena in blue Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu

In Las Vegas, Riana’s staple wear is layered tops with a jacket and short skirt with dark tights (it’s winter). In Mumbai she wears jeans and tees with light cotton shrugs.

Key trends:

Striped tees: Simple striped V-neck tshirts are a huge trend globally (you see them more in Europe and US than in India). With these tees, Kareena gets an instant international look.Kareena striped tshirt- Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu

Jackets: It’s December in Vegas, so Kareena wears all kinds of outerwear- waistcoat, leather and fleece-lined jackets.

Tight mini skirts and shorts: Kareena has curves now, but that doesn’t stop her from wearing denim and lightly-embroidered minis with black tights. Good news for us normal-sized girls.

Kareena printed scarf ek Main Aur Ekk Tu

Layering with colour mixing and lace: Manish Malhotra has very layered Kareena’s costumes by mixing colours. The looks are really colour-coordinated or matchy-matchy. Also, the ace designer has innerwear-as-outerwear a more relatable spin by giving Kareena camisoles and slips with lace on the neckline, then adding tshirts to layer. Loved that!

Accessories:

Jewellery: Kareena wears two rings on her right hand (one is a pearl) and a watch on her left. Her dangling earrings mostly comprise little charms like dull gold leaves.

Oversized bright bags: Yellow, fuchsia, blue… yum!

Manly shoes: No stilettos or sexy heeled booties for Riana, because she wears rugged men’s shoes! I loved the scene in which Kareena tottered around in Imran Khan’s shoes and complained they were too big. 😀

Scarves and stoles: Patterned and bright!

Hair and makeup:

Kareena’s hair is wild and astray, which she keeps in check with clips and pins. The red highlights suit her skin tone and style, while her lined eyes and light glossy lips keep her “real”. 🙂

Special Mention:

In the song Auntyji, Kareena Kapoor wears a gorgeous royal blue wrap dress that is feminine, classy and doesn’t reveal much (she’s out with her family after all). You can’t help liking that one!

Imran Khan’s look:

Styled by Shiraz Siddique, Imran Khan is all grown up in Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu. Dubbed appropriately as a “tightass” by Riana, Rahul is formal and stiff. His colours are mostly black and grey and he wears only slim fit shirts, trousers and cardigans. That’s right, no jeans or tshirts for Imran Khan.

Imran Khan grey shirt Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu

The only hint of colour was the green V-neck cardigan Imran wears while hanging out with Kareena in Vegas.

But if there’s one thing I could steal from his wardrobe, it would be the light blue shirt with white collar he wore in Mumbai. Paired with khakis, that was as casual or semi-formal as Imran’s character could get.

Chic surprise of the movie: Statement neckpieces

Whoever thought Ratna Pathak Shah could be so convincing as a South Mumbai socialite? This talented woman plays Imran Khan’s mother with a chic hair do, lots of attitude and is always dressed to the T. Most importantly, she can’t do without her Louis Vuitton luggage, and has a penchant for oversized neckpieces, which she carries off with a high-brow pout and smirk.

My favourite neckpiece is the one she wears at the formal dinner she hosts, large baubles and all. (Sorry, couldn’t find the picture). But here she is on the way to the opera.

Bollywood Fashion: Katrina Kaif is edgy rockgirl in Mere Brother ki Dulhan? Not!

For those who haven’t seen Mere Brother ki Dulhan yet—Katrina Kaif attempts a rocker act for a few minutes in the film. Unfortunately, neither her performance as a rocker is convincing, nor is her look what we expect from a rockstar. However, the film’s costume design team has tried to give her a distinct look that resembles a girl walking on the wild side. (Note: The costume design credits for the movie list Rocky S, Harmeet Sethi and Neha Bhatnagar; we assume Rocky S styled Katrina Kaif. If you believe otherwise, please leave a comment below).

Katrina Kaif Mere Brother ki Dulhan

Dimple aka Katrina Kaif’s s style statement
As a girl on the wild side (more than a rocker chick), you’ll see Katrina Kaif in tight shorts and coloured pants with boots, printed tees and uncombed hair. But no unusual piercings, and the tattoo on her lower back was tame! One of the brands we spotted was the very British Jack Wills.

Katrina Kaif Mere Brother ki Dulhan

In the rest of the film, Katrina’s style varies. In couple scenes, she’s in patiala salwar and ill-fitting kurtis, in some you’ll see layered tight tank tops with cropped pants (like Kareena Kapoor in Golmaal 3). And in others, she’s wearing pleasant blouses. Her most unusual look was a floral dresses with tan boots. Bold pairing, we dare say!

Accessories
Katrina has piled on colourful angles as she strums her electric guitar in Dhunki, and she sports dangling earrings when she “grows up”. They add a feminine touch and draw attention to her lovely face. We like her bang-on-trend long pendants and charm necklaces worn throughout the film.

Hair and makeup
As rocker girl, Katrina’s hair is wild, unkempt and dark. Her lips are mostly nude, though her makeup artist has given her intense smokey eyes both on the lid and below the eyes.

katrina-rockstar1

In the rest of the movie, Katrina’s makeup is mostly nude, and her hair is straighter. We especially liked the short-to-long bangs.

Our verdict on Katrina Kaif
While Katrina Kaif’s style statement in Mere Brother ki Dulhan is varied and a bit confusing, we did like some of the clothes she wore, especially like the feminine tops. We bet a number of girls will soon be asking where they can buy those clothes. And oh, while her acting performance is best left unrated, she looks gorgeous!

Imran Khan and Ali Zafar

What Imran is wearing: Mostly checkered shirts with plain white tees… yawn!

What Ali is wearing: T-shirts with blazers…huh? Bizarre!

Chic video: Imran Khan drops his jeans for Levis, oops… we mean dENiZEN

Levi Strauss Signature is now dENiZEN, and who better to announce it to the Indian youth than Bollywood’s chocolate boy Imran Khan?

In this cute advertisement, Imran drops his Levi’s Signature jeans at a public walk-in laundry for a wash, sitting in his underpants. As a coy Monica Dogra (another customer) gyrates to the music, a baffled Imran looks on. The ad ends with Imran pulling out dENiZEN jeans from the machine, and enjoying the comfort they bring.

Our verdict: Cute advertisement, intelligent casting, good choice of music and even better chemistry.

PS: dENiZEN is a recently-launched mass jeanswear brand in Asia (especially for upwardly mobile youth from 18-28), and will soon be introduced in the US as well. The dENiZEN Spring-Summer line is available at dENiZEN and multi-brand stores across India. Denim bottoms range from Rs 799 to Rs 1399. Also available: casual tops and shirts.
